Laura Deleruyelle has a Doctor of Nursing Practice degree and works hard to keep all of her patients healthy. You only get one body, so making sure that it is healthy and working properly is essential. One of the key factors to maintaining good health is having a good diet. Food is what fuels your body and helps it run properly. Good nutrition could be the difference between an energetic, healthy body, and a fatigued, sickly body.

Your body need vitamins and nutrients in order to run properly every day. However, it is very easy to become deficient of these vital things. There is a large spectrum of nutrition. There are some people who have unhealthy eating habits, some who have somewhat healthy habits, and others who focus on the types of foods they are consuming and the amount of physical exercise they are getting. According to the US Department of Health and Human Services’ webpage, unhealthy eating and physical inactivity contribute to 310,000 to 580,000 deaths per year. This is because these two factors cause heart disease, diabetes, obesity, hypertension, stroke, osteoporosis, and many types of cancer. Adding injury to insult, is the fact that essential nutrients are systematically being removed from our food supply. So, even if you think you are following a healthy diet, you may still be lacking in key nutrients. You may need to seek out advice from a doctor who specializes in analyzing and interpreting body nutrient levels through lab tests who can formulate a specific nutritional diet and supplement regimen on a case by case basis.

There are some people who try to maintain healthy habits, but because of their busy lifestyle, end up missing vital nutrients and vitamins. Many adults have to balance work, school, kids, and other family obligations. This can often lead to diets that are lacking in key elements. Many adults are deficient in vitamins D and B12, which you get from sunlight and food. It also easy for adults to become anemic due to skipping meals or grabbing something they can eat on the run. In order to have high energy levels, it is important to take the time to maintain a well-balanced diet.

People who practice good nutrition consume the right amount of calories for their height and weight. A health care provider or nutritionist can advise you on how many calories you should be consuming in a day. According to Harvard University’s family health guide, it is important for people to consume about 60 grams of protein a day, and carbohydrates should be about 45%-65% of daily calories. However, these carbs should be from high fiber and unrefined foods. Fat should be below 30%-35% of daily calories and it is important to make sure you are getting calcium, iron, and vitamin supplements on a regular basis. It should be noted, however, that iron deficiency anemia is most common in menstruating women and vegans, and that excessive iron levels can be harmful to our hearts. Therefore, iron levels should always be tested prior to initiating any iron supplementation.

Dr. Laura Deleruyelle is an advanced practice nurse who is always ready to advise her patients on how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and how to practice good nutritional habits.
