It is official that Gurgaon is the new, self-financed smart city of Haryana. The government of Haryana announced that Gurgaon will be developed as a Smart City with its own resources matching all guidelines and technical assistance criteria released by the central government. The state government took this step after the Millennium City failed to make it to the center’s list of 100 cities that will be developed as smart cities from the funding by the central government. There has been a upward demand for annexing the Millennium City in the center’s list of smart cities after it was piped down by Haryana’s two other cities: Faridabad and Karnal. The city lost its final race on the basis of some factors decided by the center.

Once Haryana is developed as a smart city, it will boast of high and quality urban life with a perfect and livable infrastructure. "As per the Centre's Smart City scheme, Rs 100 cr is given in a year for five years for developing a Smart City. So we will arrange that Rs 500 cr of our own for Gurgaon. Even though we do not get central fund, we are ready to do it of our own," says Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar. Initially, the state government had projected Gurgaon, Karnal and Faridabad as three cities to be part of the final list, but on the basis of set guidelines and selection criteria, Gurgaon couldn’t qualify in an effective manner.
