Brief Introduction of Emerald Cut Diamonds
Posted: Nov 27, 2015
Emerald cut diamonds are actually step cut diamonds. The uniqueness of this cut is how the facets look like steps carved into the gem. Unlike the brilliant cut, the facets are rather broad and are with flat planes, almost looking like a stair case. That is why it is called a step cut. Unlike a marquise cut, an emerald cut diamond doesn't have the bow-tie effect.
Generally, emerald cut diamonds look like rectangles with slightly cut corners. The name is due to the fact that initially it was a cut performed on emeralds. However looking at the popularity of this cut, it was soon used on diamonds as well. Although the long rectangular lines give lesser dazzle, compared to the round cut, but the flashing colors at the corners give the shine to the emerald cut engagement rings.
Some people are confused whether to choose emerald cut, asscher or a princess cut. To make it clear, all these cuts are rather similar to each other. Emerald cuts are long rectangular stones with slightly cropped corners. Asscher is a square cut with deeply cut corners and princess cut is square without any cuts at the corners.
Several designs for engagement rings are available. Due to the longer shape of this cut, other stones are used with it, to accentuate the stone. Tapered baguette is often seen to accompany emerald cuts. A solitaire ring, made of emerald cut diamonds is an attractive ring and it can make the fingers look longer. Thus, it is often used by women with short fingers. However, a too long emerald cut diamond on a too short finger might look out of proportion. This cut is very flexible, like the round cut, and can be seen to accompany different designs of rings. The most common ring is the one with four prongs at four corners, holding the stone steadily in its place. That also helps to protect the delicate edges of the cut. However, there are other less common ideas for an accompanying ring.
Due to the lengthy shape of the stone, it might look like a higher carat weight, compared to some of the other popular shapes like round cut, brilliant cut or princess cut. This way, the couple can concentrate their energy on the detailed design of the ring and the intricate details than the stone itself.
