A neurological disorder of the brain that is many times inherited or sometimes triggered due to the environmental changes or other external factors, migraine pain is probably one of the worst types of headaches that one can have. Caused by the hyper excitable brain networks, possibly when the serotonin levels drop and the neuropeptides are released, migraine can occur to any one and at any time. Irrespective of whether male, female or child, migraines can occur. However, the occurrence is more in women and those, who belong to the age group of 25 years and 55 years.

My migraine attacks:

I too have had migraine. Luckily I do not have them now; at least I did not have them in the last six years and am hopeful that it will not come back. I was one of the 35% of all women, who get four or even more migraine attacks every month. Mine was a classic type of migraine that came with warnings or signs of its approaching, through the aura signals.

Blind spots, flashes of light, hot flashes, intolerance of sound and a constant feeling of vomiting and nausea were my aura signals. I used to visit the doctors and after hours of tests and examinations, questions and queries, they would tell me that I had migraine. This I already knew! I asked why I had them and how I could get rid of them – and the doctor replied, there was no specific cause to why I had them and also there was no cure to it. So, I had to consider the remedies like removing the triggers one by one, so that the migraine pain also disappeared.

Identifying and eliminating the triggers:

There are many triggers that add to the migraine pain and attack. The best way to cope with the pain is to identify the triggers and gradually eliminate them. Different people have different kinds of triggers. Some have one or two triggers and some have even more. Along with light and sound, food and drinks are the most common triggers.

Foods that are high in salt content, aged cheese, alcohol, chocolates etc. are common triggers. But, you might have other foods and drinks working as a migraine trigger for you. Keeping a migraine diary and noting down what you had eaten when you had the previous attack will help you to understand whether it is a trigger for you or not. Eliminating the item will ensure if it is working.

For some, physical exercise and activities can be a significant cause or trigger for migraine pain. Trying to stay calm and not engage yourself in any kind of activity is always a better option. Sometimes, the trigger is nothing physical or external, but completely emotional. Stress and anxiety can cause you this excruciating pain. If you are in a stressful situation, whether this trigger elimination would work or not, this simple stress and tension might cause the pain. Hence, identifying the pain and eliminating it would be the only possible treatment or cure that you can try.
