How to Solve the Biggest Problems with Transparent Display

Transparent displays have been around for quite some time now, but their success is still limited, largely because of the technical challenges that developers are yet to overcome. While heads up displays or HUDs have long been used in the automotive and military industries, developments have been slow compared to the rapid pace of comparable technologies. On the retail side, an increasing number of niche suppliers are offering transparent displays, but with limited capabilities still.
Limited demand for the technology has been hampering the revenue growth of this market, but with the increasing interest of different industries (particularly the retail sector) in the use of transparent displays for advertising and promotion, greater growth opportunities are now open, which can be the first step to solving the different challenges and limitations of transparent displays in terms of capabilities, applicability, and availability.
On the supply side, manufacturers are shifting towards OLED technology, which is much easier to convert to transparent displays as opposed to dominant LCD technology. On the demand side, new AR (augmented reality) applications are requiring new types of hardware that support a transparent displays. The first step to solving the biggest problems with transparent display is to encourage more suppliers, developers, and manufacturers to invest in the market, despite it being in its embryonic stages. With the kind of demand that different industries are projecting, increasing interest over futuristic applications can be anticipated. This is evident in the highly competitive economic environment where advertising and retail sectors are starting to rerealize the value of transparent displays.
Thankfully, more companies are finding ways to address the different technical challenges plaguing the adoption of the transparent display. The increasing demand from various sectors has also increased revenue from the technology, giving manufacturers and suppliers more opportunities to weed out technical challenges and issues that used to and are still affecting the growth of the market.
Some of the most common technical issues when it comes to the manufacture of transparent display include backlighting and color filters, which are particularly difficult to conceal or make transparent. Transparent backlighting can theoretically be achieved using zinc oxide LEDs, although many say that these components are nothing more than interesting research topics. Another option, albeit expensive, would be additional optics, which can be used to avoid placing LEDs directly behind displays. The same problems persist where color filters are used, as these components too, are not transparent. Removing color filters is a practical solution, although sacrificing color can be a major drawback. In any case, companies that are invested in transparent display technology are working hard to achieve more efficient and duplicable technologies.
