Advantages of Using Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR)

GPR is an imaging technology used for subsurface earth exploration. Its advantages over other imaging techniques include the broad range of subsurface investigation, detailed high resolution data presentation, real-time data access and mobility.

GPR is a non-intrusive technique used to determine information about media beneath the earth’s surface. In impulse GPR systems a short pulse (nanoseconds) of electromagnetic energy is transmitted into the ground. A proportion of this energy is reflected back towards the surface at interfaces of media with differing electromagnetic parameters (permittivity, permeability and conductivity). The amplitude and time delay of these reflections are used to determine information about the sub-surface. (Andrew D. Strange, 2005; Jonathon C. Ralston, 2005; Vinod Chandran, 2005)

GPR systems can be used to locate underground utility lines, monitor airplane runways for structural integrity, conducting groundwater studies, detecting unexploded land mines as well as forensic research and surveying land for Construction Purposes. Its versatile in usage and this makes GPR one of the most widely used non-destructive testing equipment in the world.

Most of the GPR can penetrate and analyse concrete at depth of up to 500mm (much deeper for utility scanning GPR). GPR nowadays is commonly fitted with some user-friendly features such as non-setup required, one man operation and on-board data storage etc. Those features make the GPR survey cost-effective.

The common data output of GPR is divided into Line Scan and Grid Scan. The Line Scan provides a concrete slab profile as the antenna moves along the surface of the testing element. The target such as reinforcement bar or back side of concrete can be viewed directly. Lines Scans can also be taken in a grid manner to create 3D models of the concrete. All of the data collected during a grid survey may be used to create a three-dimensional model of detected features beneath the ground (David Hunter, 2010). By having the grid scan data, drilling concrete without hitting any reinforcing bar or other application can be done much easier
