In India, Pakistan and some other parts of the Middle-East, a wedding is generally considered as incomplete especially if the bride is not adorned with the mehandi designs on her feet and hands. Mehandi is a all natural herbal dye which is collected from the plant "henna" which gives a temporary color to the body/skin. Other than weddings, women apply mehandi on religious occasions and festivals as well.

It is a tradition in India to conceal the name or the initials of the groom in the mehandi designs of the bride. The groom has to find his name and this is believed to predict who would be dominant in the relationship, the husband or the wife. The mehandi is essential for every bride and it's important to be prepared so as to have an impressive mehandi design on the wedding day.

First of all, one should start by selecting a mehandi artist; considering their previous work, mehandi designs and rates. Some artists charge on a per hour basis while others charge on a per hand basis. Either way, these artists are affordable and very creative. The next step involves selection of a good henna designs. During the application of the bridal mehandi, care should be taken to avoid smudging the design while it is still wet. After the mehandi dries, sugar and a solution of lemon juice should be applied with cotton. This solution functions as a fixer and enhances the absorption of the dye in the skin. An exposure to heat, maybe body heat or external heat, hasten the oxidation reaction of the henna and thus quickly produces a deeper color.

After removing the mehandi using a butter knife or nails, wash hands with plain water. Applying eucalyptus oil, baby oil or any lotion removes excess mehandi as well as enhances the color. It is advisable not to remove the mehandi for at least two hours after application. Some people however prefer to keep it overnight.
