Why the alignment of your teeth is important

Despite the many orthodontic options available today, people often ignore alignment issues, assuming that they are unimportant. Mission Viejo dentists explain why crooked teeth can be more than a cosmetic concern.

Celebrities, public speakers, people who work with the public, socialites, and people who take their appearances seriously in general, tend to worry about their smiles. They know that a dazzling (or unattractive) smile can make or break an important first impression. It can color others’ opinions, judgments, and even trust level. Additionally, the image conscious among us know that a nice, straight, white smile can make a person appear more youthful.

However, there are those of us who are less concerned with appearance. Sure, those crooked teeth are embarrassing, but you have “more important” things to worry about. You don’t have time for braces, and you don’t like to look in the mirror anyway. Do you identify with these statements? If so, there are a few things, which you probably don’t know about alignment issues:

  • Crooked teeth can trap plaque. Bacteria, food particles, and other debris accumulate in tight spaces where your brush and floss can’t reach.
  • Inefficient hygiene can lead to cavities. All it takes is a tiny area for bacteria to begin colonizing. Cavities often form between the teeth, especially where they are crowded.
  • Crooked teeth can lead to gingivitis. As teeth lean, they pull away from the gum tissue, weakening the bond between the two. This can allow bacteria easier access to sensitive tissue.
  • Bite problems can cause jaw pain. Overbite, cross bite, and similar problems can put undue strain on the muscles and ligaments in the jaw, causing pain or soreness, especially when chewing. This may lead to, or aggravate TMJ disorder.
  • Alignment problems can lead to tooth damage. Uneven biting force leads to uneven wear, possibly even fractures.
  • Correcting orthodontic problems is easier than you imagine. Contrary to popular misconception, braces do not have to be uncomfortable or inconvenient. They do not even have to be visible, or affixed to your teeth, and sometimes treatment takes no more than a few months.

This is the era of high-tech dentistry, ultimate convenience, and solutions for every imaginable dental problem. We know more than ever about oral health, and cosmetic dentistry is widely available. Fantastic smiles are no longer reserved for the privileged few. A healthy, bright, straight smile is within reach for anyone, including you! Just ask your Mission Viejo dentist about your options.
