5 Techniques to Stop Web-bot Attacks for Secured Web Development
Posted: Sep 16, 2016
Web bots attacks are intrusion to your data trying to delete, corrupt or steal important data of your users and business from the site. We are in 2015, where a small backdoor opened in a website can make huge losses to the admin business. Websites supported by CMS and template frameworks often falls victim to it as they feel lack of access beyond their( CMS, Templates etc) shell architecture.
We (me and my web development company in Nigeria) have also felt the same pain and then restarted everything for our existing official website. That’s why, building a website from scratch is presumably a better way than later regretting on it. So, i have drafted these 5 tips as answer to "How to stop threats and intrusions for a secure web space?"
SSL : If you think, applying merely a free certificate of SSL will be a wall between your website and some classified intrusion bots and malware. The answer is thin, a thin wall to stop intrusion that can be easily penetrated. Make useful investment in buying SSL certificates. Geotrust and Symantec has been the most recommended when searched on Google (i just did it). Use them to good effect, work closely with their support to install and configure them in the most apposite way.
Protecting Data sets as Web Apps: The systematic way to input and output a data from a web app, requires lot of requests. That data can be validated text, images, data parameters at the back and many more unknown elements. Once you know the transacting data sets, you have all the data types for every single data element. Create a Prototype constraint. Once you create it, only that data which is permissible through the web app will reach the server side. That’s where any other intrusion or bot requests get blocked. Probably, an experienced web development company can do this at a fraction of the cost of your project.
URLs with 99% bounce rates: You can always check bounce rate for your website in Google analytics or any SE analytics for that matter. The URLs that are coming on top of your traffic booster may have 99% bounce rate. That means they are bots that are either trying to find back-doors or trying to redirect your visitors to their own site.
Some bots are made so smarter that they change their DNS and ip each time they try to harm your webpage. So, using GEoIP protection or blocking those Geo IPs directly from.htaccess can give you the protection you were looking for.
Shredded input data: No matter how trustworthy a source looks, if your custom filters set at a strong security and encryption algo doesn’t permit that URL, you must ban it quickly. Every incoming request of data must be checked before it is allowed to reach the server for requesting the answers they are looking for. You can always take help of a web development company to do this accurately and quickly.
The Permutation and combination attack: I don’t know what to call it, but hackers use it as a significant method to find passwords and username of a login page. A simple bot can check up to 1000 permutations of user-pass combinations in a minute. So, reduce the attempts to try a username or password for a single user or block the IP straight away.
Other advanced techniques include Cookie encryption, DNS and protocol validation, distinct thread routes etc. But if you are aware about these 5 anti-threat methods for secure web development. You are completely secured from 99% of web threats imposed everyday one way or the other.
