Earlier in mid - 19th century, the term Kashmir denoted only the valley between the Great Himalayas and Pir Panjal mountain range. However, today it denotes a larger area that includes the Indian-administered territories of Jammu and Kashmir (which consists of Jammu, the Kashmir Valley, and Ladakh), the Pakistani-administered territories of Azad Kashmir and Gilgit – Baltistan, and lastly the Chinese- administered regions of Aksai Chin and the Trans- Karakoram Tract.

Moving to the Indian side of Kashmir, the region has a lot to offer for vacationers and tourists who look forward to exploring its grandeur.

Pahalgam, Srinagar, Sonamarg, Yusmarg and Gulmarg are the mesmeric destinations that the tourist in us must visit in Kashmir.

Pahalgam, also known as the valley of shepherds, is situated at the confluence of the streams flowing from Sheshnag Lake and the Lidder river. Pahalgam was previously a humble shepherd's village with breathtaking views. Presently it is Kashmir's premier resort, which remains cool even at the height of summer.

Around Pahalgam, there are various places of interest which includes a huge, undulating meadow of Baisaran, surrounded by thickly wooded forests of pine. The "Betaab Valley" on the way to Chandanwari is one of the many famous attractions of Pahalgam.

Srinagar, is the state's winter capital, and is often the first stop for most travellers to Kashmir. The wonderful Dal Lake carries the most popular of Srinagar's attractions i.e. houseboats and shikaras. Various tourists spend a good part of their holiday on these waterborne hotels, watching the lake's traffic float by from balconies.

On the shores of the Dal Lake, is also the famous Mughal Gardens, which is an amalgamation of multiple hued flowers along with carpets of grass and a line of mountains on the side. This surely provides for the most scenic view.

Srinagar is also famous for its refined pashmina shawls and intricately hand woven carpets.

Gulmarg is another popular destination in Kashmir, also known as the heartland of winter sports, also rated as Asia's seventh best ski destination. It attracts tourists from worldwide for the outdoor activities it offers including golfing, horse riding, water skiing, fishing and trekking.

Hence, Kashmir has a whole lot on offer for us, with its plethora of destinations.
