Posted: Dec 11, 2015
Summary: This article throws light on Orthotopic Liver Transplantation, its survival rate and factors that affects its success.
Orthotopic Liver Transplantation (OLT) is the treatment of choice for patients with acute liver failure or end-stage liver disease. Liver is one of the crucial organs of human body which performs a key role in regulating metabolism while regulating other numerous functions like detoxification, decomposition of red blood cells, synthesis of plasma protein and much more. A liver transplant becomes necessary when due to any reason this crucial organ stops working. The most common situation when liver transplantation becomes evident is during cirrhosis, a disease in which healthy hepatic tissues get replaced with scar tissues.
In Orthotopic Liver Transplantation, a damaged liver in the recipient body is replaced with a healthy liver obtained from the donor body. The technique was first developed at University of Colorado, Denver followed by at University of Pittsburgh and at Cambridge. The credit for first OLT is given to Jack Cannon who in 1956 performed the surgery on an animal species. Since then a lot of advances have been made in this field to ensure high survival rate of patients. With the introduction of advanced and improved surgical technique and several new immunosuppressive medications over the past 15 years, outcomes of OLT has improved significantly.
OLT is required when other medical treatments fail to keep a damaged liver functioning. OLT has a 70-80% survival rate with an average of 5 years of survival. The patient undergoing OLT generally leads a good quality of life. It has been found through different studies that success of liver transplantation is an interdisciplinary team approach which not only includes selection of the recipient, but also timings of the transplantation surgery, the operative procedure, prevention and treatment of post-operative complications, intense care management and careful follow up after the surgery.
India is becoming a great spot for medical tourism. It has up opened its medical facilities to the global populace to come and get treated. Liver transplantation is a costly affair. Not only the surgery alone, but post-operative stay and intense care management also costs a lot of money. Such a high cost treatment can be obtained in a cost effective way in India only.
