Next year is set to be a big year with cell phone releases. Shadowed by the success of Apple and Samsung, Sony has had a rough past couple of years in the cellphone division however they are not ready to give up just yet. Sony is planning to debut a new model to their Xperia line, the Xperia Z6 sometime next year although not a lot of information is available regarding the new phone. Originally, there were rumors of seeing five different variants (Xperia Z6, Z6 Mini, Z6 Compact, Z6 Plus, and Z6 Ultra) however, there are now talks of only two variants although that may change.

Both models of the Xperia Z6 are said to be released at separate times in 2016 with one being the standard variant and the second variant is unclear as to if it will be of the Ultra, Mini, Plus, or Compact type. Regardless of the design variations, both models are said to be powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 820 SoC and feature a new metal design leaving behind their bezel, heavy design which has been used on their previous models. Supposedly, no flagship will be announced at the CES 2016 in January but instead, the first reveal will be sometime in June or July while the second will follow around October.

Since not a lot of information has been released regarding the new phone, there is speculation regarding the size of the Xperia Z6 variants. In lieu of the lack of information known at this time, speculation of the new phone’s features can be made regarding past specs in the Z series. For example, the Z series’ camera is often praised as one of the best in the industry so perhaps there will be improvements to the camera. In addition, the Z series is made of premium materials, has top-tier specs, and the last model even adopted the fingerprint sensor embedded in the side-mounted power button.

While the promise of the new metallic phone has a lot of potential, Sony faces the challenge of how to market the phone successfully in the United States without being overshadowed by their competition. Sony’s fundamental problem is typically cited as a lack of appropriate marketing and lack of availability despite having great products. In the coming months, more specific rumors and confirmations will begin to release and Sony’s plans for their new phone will become more apparent.
