Summary: The polytechnic courses are designed to make skilled technicians. The polytechnic colleges in Gujarat are doing the something more. They are encouraging them to be entrepreneur.

The polytechnic colleges have been established to churn out good technicians for the industry. The demand for technician will increase in the states with the highest industrialisation for the obvious reasons. The technician’s job at the entry level are low key and naturally in the low-income bracket. A local technician will obviously enjoy the economic advantage over the technicians from other states as the cost of housing will be less for the local technicians and the language will be no bar to communication. It is also good for the industry because, they will be less pressed to provide accommodation to their skilled technicians. The nit result is the demand for the diploma engineers.

Norms to follow

The polytechnic colleges are hubs to provide technical education to the aspirants and the eligibility criteria is the school leaving exams. There are 103 diploma colleges / polytechnics in Gujarat – not 67. and the colleges educate in the branch of engineering and other aspects also including textile and fashion designing. There are polytechnic colleges exclusively for women and it was once the forte of government run education system only. However, there are now private colleges coming up with exclusive women’s only polytechnics. The polytechnic education is governed by the All India Council for Technical Education or AICTE norms and the institute’s need approval from the authorities for running it.

The admission procedure

The admission to courses in polytechnic is highly competitive. The polytechnic admissions Gujarat is governed by guidelines issued by the state government under AICTE norms. The admissions are by the entrance exam, a common exam for the polytechnic institutes and diploma colleges with the weighted average of the school leaving exam marks. The final list is prepared to count these two marks and the after the counselling of the students. It is obvious that the demand for the government run institutes will be more. The two basic reasons are the course fees and the faculties.

The job creation

The polytechnic colleges are doing an excellent service to the industry and common people. The pass-outs from polytechnics are not waiting for a job, the technical knowledge and the skill they are acquiring in the institutes are helping them to set up new service outlets and thus generating more employment and income and keeping up the cost of maintenance of appliance low. The absorption of a pass-out in an industry limits the job growth to the single person involved. But, setting up a service centre or a start-up opens the doors of employment for many. It happens, because the entry level pay-pack is not a beauty, the cost of education is low, so there is no pressure to repay the education cost and lastly it imparts the confidence. However, most of the pass-outs look for a job to start their career. The pass-outs from the these colleges are no exception.
