Fire fighting is one of the basic life skills, which is an essential aid to the civilians for their own and others’ safety. There are various measures that involve the fire safety. This can be categorized into PASSIVE TECHNIQUE AND ACTIVE TECHNIQUE. Passive techniques are methods that are incorporated during the construction stage of the respective building. For e.g. provision of fire lifts, fire exits, use of constructional material with higher fire rating. Active measures involve the fire & safety equipments and their uses, briefed as follows:

DETECTION SYSTEMS

Detection systems are designed to detect the potential for a fire. Various detectors detect smoke, heat, gas or combination of the above.

FIRE DETECTION SYSTEMS: Detectors that sense flames, smoke and heat are installed in the building. After activation, they blow out the siren with a light flashing. They are similar to Smoke detectors and are capable enough to sense the smoke that’s even invisible to naked eyes.

GAS DETECTION SYSTEM: The gas sensors installed sense gases that are toxic and combustible in nature. CO2 and CO are common gases that are detected. These are again installed with sound and light system for the alert.

LINEAR HEAT DETECTION SYSTEM: These are highly advanced line type heat detecting system with quickest time detection and higher accuracy. These are golden where heat, humidity, frost are in extreme levels.

FIRE EXTINGUISHERS: It is one of the most common active equipment used. It is a cylinder filled with compressed water/gas/foam. These weigh from 0.5 to 14 K.G.s and can easily hand held heavier units which are used on construction sites, airports, docks, marines etc.

FIRE-ESCAPES: These are metal staircases that can be installed in the alternate open area of the building that can be used in case of fires. These are retractable and slide down vertically the building.

FIRST AID KITS: These are regular kits with added products like defibrillators, creams, bandages and replacements.

SPRINKLER SYSTEM: These are pipe system that runs across the ceiling with shower heads in a grid distance. Whenever the alarm is activated manually/automated, the sprinkler system starts working and water is sprinkled to put out fire. Fire pumps are a part of the system that uses building’s water supply for the water.

FIREFIGHTING FOAM CONCERNTRATES: Foam based compressed substance that helps suppresses the fire. It creates a non-permeable membrane that cuts off the oxygen supply for the fire to grow. These are used when the water is ineffective and/or dangerous for putting out fire. For e.g. oil fires or industrial fires. They are available in low, medium and high expansion foams according to the requirement. They work well for closed spaces where the ventilation is poor such as hangers.

DRY CHEMICAL POWDER: These are equipments that are filled with fire extinguishing powder, which when sprayed, puts out the fire almost immediately. They can usually be gas or dry chemical or water mist depending upon their design specifications.
