Scaffolding/scaffold/staging is a momentary structure that is built along the vertical direction of an under construction building. The construction workers can use the height as they go up in the construction.
One of the many kinds of scaffolding is the aluminum kind. Unlike commercial bamboo scaffolds, the aluminum ones are stronger and don’t need to be tied with ropes. These can be easily screwed and unscrewed as per the need. Due to this added precision they are stronger, more stable, more durable and hence safer.
Following are a few stated facts about aluminum scaffolding:
Aluminium scaffolds can be applicable in repair, maintenance and construction of buildings, bridges and other man-made structures.
Another mainstream application involves its work in formwork creation such as concert stages, towers, grandstand seating, shoring etc.
Before using the installed scaffold it must be checked for any lose screws or casters. The wheels in them must have a smooth rotation for proper movement and the brakes installed must be properly working.
The length and width of each scaffold pattern vary in accordance to the building structure. Therefore, there are standards designed for the application. For e.g. the height between two scaffolds or the lift height must between 2 to 2.7 m. For a building to be permitted to be scaffold, the initial height must be at least 4 m. horizontal board thickness determines the transom placement [transoms are the units that hold the boards and supports together]. The distance between two transoms must be 1.2 m, if the board thickness implanted is 38 mm. similarly, for 50 mm thick board, the standard distance between transoms must be 2.6 m.
The ground check must be thorough before the tower is setup. Soft soil will affect the stability of the scaffold.
Aluminium scaffolds are recyclable and are easily reusable but one must take care while reusing the previous units. They must be in perfectly working condition.
Guardrails and toe boards can be used on the platforms for added precision in fixtures. The height must be at least 0.95 m with provision of alternate guardrail at the minimum gap of 0.47 m.
The aluminium pipes [circular/rectangular] are tied together with the help of couplers. This provides stability in higher floors where wind force has huge force against the structure. Scaffolding must not be placed if the wind speed is higher than 17 mph.
The horizontal load apart from the self-load is because of the workers, equipments and materials. The limit to these loads is 20 K.G.s and it must not be exceeded.
The vertical load when added within the framework will only add to the stability but outside it can be hazardous.
Always avoid creating and using the tower near electrical wires and/or indiscreet machinery.
It is always good to tie the scaffold with the adjacent building or the stable strong part of the respective building.
Check the tower every week for the entire constructional duration.
