The dress fits you well, your makeup's alright and with a picture-perfect smile, you're just about to step out when you feel that something's not quite right.

A closer look and you know it is the imperfect skin tone above your lips that mars the look. Moustache shadows or dark upper lip area is an occurrence wherein, even after getting rid of the facial hair on your upper lips, your skin continues to remain darker than other parts of your face. While overexposure to the sun and hormonal imbalance during puberty and pregnancy come across as common causes, cosmetic dermatologist Meghna Gupta says that deficiency of vitamin E and iron cause melasma or dark patches around the area. "Allergic reactions to medicines, especially oral contraceptives, creams that contain tar derivatives and facial melanosis (hyperpigmentation) around the area are other reasons."

Since the skin in that area is sensitive, excessive plucking or waxing aggravates the problem. you can lighten the problem with the following measures l

  • Keep a watch on what you eat. Since our body needs more than 72 vitamins and minerals, eating a wide variety of foods can minimise these deficiencies. Advises dietitian RD Smita Nanda, "Have plenty of water, eat your fruits instead of drinking them and have plenty of green vegetables. While food items that are rich in Omega-3 fatty acids like flaxseed oil, chia seeds, fish oil and walnuts help, it is important to get your diet plan analysed by your dietitian."
  • The occurrence could also be an indicator that something is not right with your body. Thus, following a healthy lifestyle is a must. Dietitian Nupur Krishnan says, "Try staying away from medications as much as possible in order to avoid their side-effects. While it is alright to give in to your temptations once in a while by indulging in foods of your choice, don't overdo it. Greasy items, large meals, high caffeine-intake and emotional bingeing do more harm than you realise. Sleep for a minimum of seven hours and don't compromise on it. Also, prevention is always better than cure and thus, go for regular blood check-ups." Exercising, meditation, listening to music and pampering oneself with regular massages help unwind and works well.
  • Get your skincare regime in place and apply sunscreen (SPF 50) not only during summer but also in winter. Apply sunscreen at least half an hour before you step out. Avoid waxing the area and choose threading instead.
  • Dermatologist Geeta Oberoi suggests a few other options. "Skin lightening creams, chemical peels, microdermabrasion and laser resurfacing are other alternatives," she ends.
