First thing to make sure is that you should not stop brushing even with bleeding gums. It is important to keep your teeth clean. Instead switch to a brush with soft bristles and use toothpaste made for sensitive teeth.

Brushing alone is not sufficient, it is necessary that you visit your dentist for regular check up. Plague which builds up on teeth can result in more bleeding. To reduce any kind of plague build-up you should:

  • Brush twice a day using a fluoride based toothpaste. Do not brush at least an hour after eating or drinking to protect enamel of your teeth.
  • Make use of a rechargeable electric toothbrush which has rotating bristles. It comes with a timer and is much more efficient at removing plagues as compared to manual brushes.
  • Floss your teeth at least thrice a week to remove any trapped food between the teeth. This greatly reduces the chances of plague build up.
  • Smoking is a strict no. If you smoke give up.
  • Diabetic patients should keep a critical check on their sugar levels. Gum diseases like gingivitis are more common in people with diabetes.
  • Mouthwash can also come in handy in dealing with the problem. However during pregnancy you should check with your doctor to make use of mouthwash as some contain chlorhexidine, an antiseptic.

What Other Problems Can Be Faced

If left untreated gingivitis can cause periodontitis that result into weakening of bone and tissue that anchor your teeth to your jaw. See your dentist immediately if you witness such problems. Ignoring the symptoms can result into abscesses or pus-filled sacs leading to severe damage to your teeth. Pockets developed between your teeth and gums can get enlarged leading to teeth finally falling out.

All these problems can be prevented and avoided if take proper care of your oral health and visit your dentist regularly.

Harm for baby

There are no evidences that suggest that gum diseases have any direct effect on the baby. However this can affect overall health of your body which can result into complications of growth of the baby. According to some experts there is some sort of connection between periodontitis and health of newborn child. According to them the disease can result into premature delivery, low birth weight and some other pregnancy complications.

However these are just suggestions and advice. Overall you should not panic and take proper care of your dental health during pregnancy.
