Garden ornaments are used to enhance the beauty of gardens and parks. They are man-made and are used for landscaped gardens. Ornaments are employed according to the theme that is being followed. Garden items like bird baths and bird feeders, fountains, outdoor sculpture, and landscape lighting are used to enhance the beauty of the garden. Urns made of stones and ceramic are also used to hold plants and for decoration in the house or outside. Mediterranean style urns and stone urns add to the attractiveness of door entrances, they give color to the garden, and can even be used as fountains.

Choosing The Right Ornament For Your Garden

Certain things have to be kept in mind when choosing garden ornaments. The designer must have a definite idea of where the ornament is going to be placed. They must be chosen with care so there is no clutter. The purpose of the garden urn or any other ornament is to add to the beauty of the garden, not distract from it. If the designer is following a theme such as a Classical theme or a spiritual theme, ornaments that appeal to the eye and enhance the experience of the theme must be chosen. The Asian tradition incorporating Feng Shui beliefs is a very popular garden theme.

History Of The Use Of Garden Ornaments

Garden statues have been used from ancient times. Ancient Egypt used it in temple gardens and temples. The Greeks placed statues and stone urns in their sacred groves. The Romans improved upon it for their gardens. Many garden ornaments have been recovered from the ruins of Pompeii and during excavations at Herculaneum. The Western world used statues and ornaments in their gardens through renaissance and even up to the twentieth century. The popularity of abstract art and modern art led to them being used to beautify gardens. Chinese gardners used Chinese Scholar’s rocks, the Koreans stone art, and the Japanese Suiseki to enhance the look of their gardens.

Garden urns are made from a variety of materials including stone, polymers, and metals. The choice of material depends on where it is going to be used and its purpose. The budget also has a huge role to play in the selection of the materials. Yorkshire stone that changes to the color of dark honey when it ages is perfect for paving stones. It is possible to have beautiful ornamentation on sandstones but it does not last as long as harder stones like granite. Metals like iron and steel, copper, and bronze are also used to make statues, garden sculpture, gates, and fences.
