Why Caissons Are Needed for Excavations?
Posted: Jan 12, 2016
Whether it’s a bridge being built with supports far under water or a multistory construction that technically begins well below the water table, caissons might be a necessary fixture to ensure construction stability. This unique construction design tends to go hand-in-hand with excavations or underwater construction and is a common part of many commercial, public and even residential building projects.
Caissons are nothing more than watertight chambers that are placed below the water table. The water is kept out of these chambers courtesy of air pressure. This water-free zone is critical when construction work must be carried out under water. This creation essentially enables bridges and piers to be built to withstand the test of time. By creating a water-free area within which to work, the drilling companies are able to perform their work in environments that would otherwise not be conducive to the task at hand.
Caissons commonly serve as foundational pieces for such structures as piers and bridges. These boxes or cylinders may be built offsite and then sunk into the ground to form the foundation for the construction that will rise above the water.
Similar in concept to retaining walls, caissons are designed to provide support from nature’s forces. Whereas retaining walls typically are put into place to keep soil from infiltrating an excavation, caissons deliver support against water.
If caissons are needed for an upcoming project, it’s best to select a drilling company for the job with care. To find a reputable drilling firm that understands the ins and outs of this type of construction, look for:
- Companies that specialize in caisson, retaining wall and other similar types of construction
- Firms that have been existence for a while and bring a lot of experience to the table
- Firms that have a long track record of working for commercial and public employers for the creation of caissons, retaining walls and other similar structures
Excavation work calls for a specialty contractor that understands the challenges posed by different site conditions. When a project must begin below water and then rise above, drilling companies with underwater experience in the construction of caissons and piers are essential for product success. Just take care when selecting a firm to ensure expertise goes along with the job.
