Moms are very well aware as to how swaddling can help babies in sleeping better by making them feel secure and snug. Still, more room is needed by some babies for moving as compared to others. Generally, in typical swaddling, legs and arms are kept tucked close to the body. For moms, it isn’t easy to modify this system. There are several alternatives to finding a ground between ‘loose enough to move’ and ‘swaddling tight’. This is quite helpful for babies who are transitioning out of swaddle or are new to swaddling.

Yet, if you don’t know how to swaddle with blanket, it is not going to be easy. Often, babies are seen wriggling and kicking their way out and mommies are left rewrapping again and again.

Given below are 2 methods of how to swaddle?

  1. A blanket must be laid out on a flat surface – It must arranged in a diamond shape. The dimension of the blanket must be 40"x 40". Try getting a blanket typically for swaddle as it is going to be the best.
  2. Ensure that the swaddle blanket is a very stretchy and thin material. With this, swaddling the baby would be made easy and it would also keep him from getting too hot.
  3. Folding down the top corner of the blanket is going to be easy. The fold should be as long as the height of the baby.
  4. The baby must be laid down on the blanket so that her or his neck is on the fold. If the baby is very young, ensure that the body and head is supported properly while doing this.
  5. The baby’s arm must be gently placed at her or his side and must be held in place. Alternatively, it can be bending towards the tummy or the chest just as they are in the womb. This might feel hard to tightly swaddle although the baby would definitely be more comfortable.
  6. The first side must be wrapped. One corner of the blanket must be pulled over the body of the baby and must be tucked under her or his back. It should be tucked snugly enough so that the arm of the baby is held in place.
  7. The arm of the baby must be moved into position. The other arm of the baby must be placed at her or his side and must be held in place. Just like previous arm, this one too can be moved to the tummy or the chest.
  8. The bottom of the swaddle must be closed. The bottom corner of the blanket must be pulled towards the center of the shoulder of the baby. It should be tucked behind the left shoulder of the baby so that it is between the bottom layer of the blanket and the shoulder.
  9. The right corner of the blanket must be pulled over the baby. It must be folded so that a V-neck swaddle is formed between right and left corners. The end must never be tucked anywhere. With left hand, the blanket must be gently held in place on the chest of the baby.
  10. With the right hand, the right corner must be flipped, which must be somewhere near the feet of the baby.
  11. The flipped right corner must be pulled over the right shoulder of the baby and must be tucked into the swaddle’s back. Probably, the baby has to be lifted, so that the final tuck is completed.
