If you want to add colour and vibrancy to your property, but you don’t have a lot of outdoor space, why not consider hanging window planters? You can easily put them up without too much effort and they don’t have to cost a fortune! Want to know more? Take a look below…

Firstly, Measure And Mark

Before you begin you’ll need to measure from the underside of the windowsill about one inch down and mark the spot with a pencil. This’ll be where you’ll locate the top of the bracket. Make sure you’ve got the brackets ready to go – all painted or stained as necessary. This stage is important as you don’t want the window planters to hang at an angle; they need to be pleasing to the eye!

Secondly, Install The Bracket

Hold the bracket with the top on the pencil mark. Make a hole with a countersink bit on your drill into the bracket on the mark. Then fix the bracket to the house with a galvanized decking screw, about three inches in length should be ideal. If you’re drilling through vinyl or aluminium, you’ll need to drill through the siding as well.

Make sure you’ve got the bracket absolutely level before drilling the second hole. Secure with another three inch screw. Now the fixing is complete you can start the next stage. Remember that planters that hang on your windows can be very heavy when full, so it’s advisable to hang the box and then add the soil and the plants to avoid injury!

Thirdly, Fill The Box

There’s a huge range of home decoration hanging garden planters to choose from. Plastic, metal, and wood are all readily available, so pick one to suit your outdoor style. If you want to grow your own fruit and vegetables this way you’ll be able to opt for fabric hanging planters to grow tomatoes and strawberries, as well as growbag pouches for herbs. Alternatively, you can let the professionals take care of the details. They can choose and install the window boxes for you, so you can skip the annoying research.

Make sure your hanging garden box has adequate drainage holes. Then you can add the potting mix containing peat and relevant nutrients - fill to about half before setting the plants. Put the tallest plants, such as geraniums at the back with any trailing plants like lobelia hanging over the front and sides. Fill in between with pansies and extra soil mix, then water thoroughly.

Finally, Maintain The Hanging Window Planters

Don’t forget that your hanging garden boxes will need watering ongoing and more so in very hot weather. You’ll need to soak the soil completely each time. It’s a good idea to feed the regularly too – choose a water-soluble flowering plant fertilizer for the best results. If the box starts to look overcrowded and needs watering too often, simply take out some of the plants.

When plants start to look straggly you can either trim them back or remove them completely, and replace them with fresh new ones. Once your hanging garden is established you can experiment with different colours and designs to ensure your house will stand out from the crowd!
