How can you tell if you have a gifted child? One way is to have them enrolled in special school programs that will test their IQ, assess their scores, grades, and general performance, all the while getting input from their teachers. However you don’t need to depend solely on school as there are signs you can look for to determine if this is gifted or not.

Primary Signs

Child behavior among the gifted is generally the same as with other kids, but the difference is the speed in the manner they learn new words. At a young age you may notice they learn new words quickly and speak fluently. You may also notice they have finely developed powers of observation and have a good eye for details.

Even at a young age you’re going to see the child may spend a lot of time reading on their own, and the magazines and books they read are usually for older children. Another common sign is their interest in different types of intellectual activities, and most of them have keenly developed powers of synthesis, conceptualization and abstraction, and they have an inquisitive nature. Another thing that sets them apart is their often critical nature, and they quickly see through inconsistencies.

Unique Learning Abilities

Children everywhere are eager to know more about the world around them, their surroundings, gain new experiences and so on. But what makes gifted kids different is their ability to learn new things and the ease with which their brains are able to absorb and process the information. While the human brain is capable of assimilating new data, the process is much faster with the gifted.

For these reasons, these children have the ability to rapidly learn new skills and ideas, and many have this tendency to be drawn to a specific subject (i.e. animals, astronomy, playing the piano) and going out of their way to learn more about the subject. In their quest to learn more, these children also tend to ask questions with emphasis on increasing their understanding.

Finally, if you study gifted and talented NYC kids as well as those elsewhere, one of the things you will notice is their excellent memory and ability to recall things they have learned, seen or heard. Apart from preferring to read rather than engage in physical play, these kids don’t need a lot of instruction or directions when starting a new activity.
