Depending on sources, American workers do not use around 429 million paid vacation days a year. This been a trend for a long time now, and is due to many different reasons. Perhaps the most important reason is that the person who has accrued the vacation days simply does not see the value in taking a vacation.

But that value is there - some of the best memories of my youth happened during vacations, and those vacations almost always involved driving across this great country in our car. The driving vacation has a lot of advantages. The biggest is the adaptability of the driving vacation - it can be a more open platform, with a looser schedule or it can be timed down to a fine degree.

In either case, it is a chance for your family to spend time together in an extended setting, and much of the bad things about driving vacations (kids driving you mad, for instance!) have been nearly eliminated by the use of modern technologies.

So we have gathered some tips here in the hopes that more people will be3gin using their vacation time to greater effect. It is good for the person who earned it at work to get away from the job and decompress, and it is great for bringing families together, especially if this type of activity is made into a yearly event where the kids can take a greater part in choosing destinations as they get older!

Inexpensive Gas Means Cheaper Travel

The trends at the moment for inexpensive gas prices are a great reason to revive the driving vacation and for most of us in the US, there are great sites to see within an easy 1 - 2 day drive. Camping outings can be extremely fun, and the Blue Ridge Parkway to the White Mountains or the Presidential Mountain Range can offer exquisite scenery, and new sites and nature opportunities every day.

Longer trips can be great too, like seeing the sites of the American Desert - the Grand Canyon, the Petrified Forest, Chaka Canyon and many other beautiful areas are within a fairly short drive of each other once you get to the Western Lands!

Stops Along The Way

Whether you are driving a fairly short distance or a long one, schedule stops at sights along the way - the giant ball of twine might not be for you, but there are regional museums and historical sights across this country that are worth taking a look at! Schedule your driving days so that there are several opportunities to get out and stretch out, or take a shopping break as well as seeing important and beautiful sites.

Once The Itinerary Is Done, Plan For The Drive!

Once the itinerary is completed, it is time to think about the drive itself. Take plenty of phone chargers and spare USB cords, and find a good cooler for your car that you can keep snacks and picnic items in. Eat at least some of your meals as picnics, and take the time to find recommended restaurants along your path - avoid the big chain restaurants and look for those special sandwich or barbecue joints that will make the trip extra memorable.

Get The Car Ready

Of course, a big part of the driving vacation is making sure your car is ready to go. Change the oil if it needs it, or if it will need it halfway through the trip, and perform a regular check on tires, brakes, lights, tag and registration, etc. To make sure that your trip will proceed smoothly with no hassles.

Most of all, plan to spend time with the family - the road trip is a great American tradition that should be brought back and enjoyed by as many families as possible. It is good for you, and it will be good for your family!
