Kitchen Designs: Design Ideas for Small Kitchens

While small spaces provide unique challenges, especially in the case of kitchen designs, they provide opportunities for equally unique solutions. Embrace the challenge and here are some more ideas.

1. Colour adds life/character

This point is not repeating itself. The solution here is to not change anything in the kitchen but the colour. Opting for a bold colour like primary colours in the shade of toys would add much to the character of the cooking space. Moreover it becomes a design element to the house instead of a small awkward part of the house. Its position in an open floor plan, in full view to the guests then becomes justified. In other words, kitchens become fashion elements of the house.

2. Contrast of colours

A contrast of colours in small space breaks the rule of using a uniform shade in order to not break the eye scanning the area. However, using solid, strong contrasting colours add a touch of sophistication. For e.g. dark woods or black used with cream or white shades are good choices.

Minimally using such contrasts without overdoing it adds a chic look to the cooking space.

Tip: Usually using lighter colour in greater proportion and using darker tomes (dark wood, stained wood or paint) to break the lighter shades does more to keep the lightness of the room alive while making the design elegant and handsome.

3. Open Shelves Instead of Cabinets

The title of the section says it all doesn’t it. However, not many investors in modular kitchens in Bangalore and even other urban areas readily opt for this solution. The reason perhaps lies in the fact that the aspects that are perceived to be its cons are also its pros.

Con: Open shelves leave the clutter of the kitchen in full view.

Pro: However, colourful or good cutlery can in itself be a decorative element that lifts the kitchen.

Con: Open shelves accumulate more dust, are more prone to get dirty.

Pro: They are more accessible and hence more efficient and easy to clean.

Pro: The open design makes the kitchen space more airy and allows for more light to travel in the cooking space and lightens the air.

4. Uniformity of Colour

By now this point has been well established and needs no elaboration. A uniform shade throughout the area unifies the space. By not breaking the eye overall it gives the effect of having more space than there actually is.

5. Incorporate Furniture on the Periphery

This is perhaps the toughest design idea to implement but if accomplished, it adds a very unique character to one’s kitchen. The slant cannot be copied easily as it is heavily dependent on the demands of particular spaces and preferences.

Incorporating the furniture near the kitchen especially in the case of an open floor plan goes a long way in distributing the storage load the kitchen has to bear. For e.g. a bookshelf near the kitchen can not only carry one’s favourite cookbooks but depending on the design also carry some cutlery and other items that are used only intermittently.
