It goes without saying that brake pad replacement is one of the most important aspects of vehicle maintenance that ensures safe driving as well. When it comes to faulty brake pads, the first thought that comes across is to take the vehicle to a garage service for brake pad replacement, which may cost you a fortune. You can save your hard-earned money by doing the job on your own. Yes, replacing brake pads is relatively a simple task for anybody with basic mechanical knowledge. All you need to do is buck up yourself, download repair manuals, and of course, shop for some necessary tools.

The repair manuals contain detailed and step-by-step procedure of brake pad replacement that goes like this.

Step 1: Wheel Removal

Firstly, you have to park your car on a flat surface, then place the wooden blocks behind the rear tires to keep the car stable when it is jacked. Then, you carefully loosen the wheel nuts but do not remove them. You are advised to use either a trolley jack or portable jack to lift the front end of the vehicle off the ground. Now you can remove the wheels completely.

Step 2: Brake Caliper Compression

After removing the wheels, take the C clamp to compress the piston of the caliper to force it into the brake caliper.. This is to remove the caliper assembly and to create additional space so as to mount the new brake pads.

The mounting bolts of the caliper can be unbolted by making use of a ratchet and accurately sized socket. The caliper easily comes away from the rotor.

Step 3: Remove and Inspect

Now, you can remove the old brake pads. If you find uneven wear on them, it clearly indicates that your car is having other problems too. Through this, you can also determine health of the rotor. If you find rotor covered in deep grooves, you should replace it.

Step 4: Installation of New Pads

Now you can install the set of pads into the caliper. You can refer to the repair manual to get it done neatly.

Step 5: Refitting and Safety Check

After installation, you should check everything intricately to make sure you have accomplished the task. Do not forget to check fluid levels before testing the brakes.

So, download repair manuals from reputed websites to get comprehensive procedure of removing and installing brake pads. Along with this, you will get maintenance tips in repair manuals to keep your car’s health fighting fit.
