Are you fed up of watching regular Hollywood movies? Do you think that you could have done better in terms of direction/acting? Then it’s high time for you to show your creativity. Show your talent – try independent filmmaking.

An independent film, also known as indie film, is a feature film which is produced completely outside a major film studio system. Also, it is produced and distributed by independent entertainment agencies. Independent films generally have a considerably lower budget as compared to studio films, and marketing is generally characterised by limited release. However, sometimes they also have big marketing campaigns and wider releases but that happens in case if production house has a wide budget. Local, national, and international film festivals often showcase indie films before their theatrical release. Indie films are sometime so genius that it even competes with mainstream films, if backed up with proper funding and distribution.

The major attraction for independent film makers is that they have their freedom of creativity, which big film makers simply can’t. There is a reason for this – fear. Big film makers are often afraid to experiment with the content or direction, because it’s a big risk. If they fail, then they may lose their funding, and the marketing will flop. Ultimately no one will back their production. So filmmakers tend to play safe. They use a certain pattern that audiences always like. So, they avoid major experimentation in creation of a safe movie – which is expected to be a commercial success, director’s creativity is sacrificed.

On the other hand indie films don’t have any such limitations. Here, the directors get to produce an undiluted and unaltered version of their vision. Big movies have to satiate the public to prove to be a good return on investment to producers. But such is not the case with indie filmmakers, however their film can also be a big commercial success; but they don’t follow any pre defined codes – it’s the sole creation of creativity and vision.

The codes that are followed by big filmmakers include casting popular actors and actresses. Reason is simple – they are popular, people want to see them. Doesn’t matter if content of the movie is unappealing, or is simply garbage. Even if everyone knows what’s going to happen, if you throw in a famous name people will flock in just to see them. That’s a universal success formula! On the other hand, independent filmmakers tend to cast fresh talent in their films. Indie films have new actors and fresh faces in them, which make things even more interesting. And the director can proudly call it his art work.

However, it’s a sad truth that indie films have to struggle a lot in front of Hollywood mammoths. Indie films may have smaller budgets, but in terms of story line – they offer better entertainment and vision. Indie films can be simply great if backed up with proper funding and other aspects like good lighting, proper plot, convincing actors and actresses, and most importantly effective editing.
