The last quarter of 2015 saw the arrival of the Honda CR-V DTi-L limited edition, a diesel version of the popular Honda CR-V. One of the primary rivals for this vehicle is a plucky newcomer, the Hyundai Tucson, which performed well against the top sellers in 2015. So how do these two leaders in the small SUV segment stack up against each other?

The Honda CR-V DTi-L Limited Edition Diesel

The Honda CR-V DTi-L is still a relatively fresh addition to the Honda stable, and it replaces the outgoing 2.2 diesel. This model has a 1.6L turbo-charged diesel powerplant, and it is very well equipped with features such as HID headlights, front and rear parking sensors, electric folding mirrors, a reversing camera, cruise control, automatic wipers, LED cornering lights, an electric tailgate and 18" alloy wheels. Strangely this diesel model lacks the LaneWatch camera monitoring and the sunroof which is available on the cheaper VTi-L petrol model. However, the extra price paid for this model becomes evident when looking at other features, such as part time all-wheel drive, a diesel powertrain and a nine speed automatic transmission.

The Hyundai Tucson 2.0 CRDi AWD

The Tucson is still a relative newcomer to the small SUV segment in Australia, but it has already made quite an impression. Like many vehicles in this segment it is powered by a 2.2L diesel engine delivering 136kw of power and 400 Nm of torque, in comparison the Honda CR-V 1.6L diesel powerplant produces 118kw of power and 350 Nm of torque. The Tucson features the following equipment: full LED lighting at the front and rear, heated power folding mirrors, an electric sunroof, parking sensors, a reversing camera and larger 19" alloy wheels. Both the Honda CR-V and the Hyundai Tucson have 5 star ANCAP safety ratings although they use different systems.

Price Comparisons

Finding the correct pricing in the small SUV market is a core factor for sales dominance, but isn’t the only consideration. The Honda CR-V price is $44,290 before on roads for this CR-V DTi-L limited edition model. This is a price increase of $1,250 over the outgoing 2.2 DTi-L which it replaces. However, despite this slight price increase, the Honda CR-V for sale here is $1,200 cheaper than the Hyundai Tucson Highlander 2.0 CRDi AWD listed price. It should also be noted that both of these vehicles offer far more value than their other rivals in the segment including the Toyota RAV4 AWD which hovers just under the $50,000 mark.
