Inguinal Hernia Surgery Over: What’s Next?

Thousands of people across the country undergo surgery each year to repair inguinal hernias. This common hernia type doesn’t always require medical intervention, but in some cases repair is needed to prevent further damage or alleviate pain.

If this surgery has been performed, chances are it was done laparoscopically. The good news is this less-invasive form of surgery generally means a fast recovery period and a quick discharge from the hospital. That, however, doesn’t mean patients who undergo hernia repair won’t have some instructions to follow in the days and weeks after surgery.

Here are a few things patients need to know when it’s time to go home:

  • Medications – Chances are some medications will be prescribed to control pain after surgery. Follow instructions carefully. If gas pains are a concern, over-the-counter medication is often helpful. Milk of Magnesia or Dulcolax can also typically be used if constipation is a concern.
  • Getting back into the normal routine – The first day after surgery is generally when it’s OK to take a shower, but gentle activities only should be introduced in the first week or so after surgery. It’s best to avoid driving while pain meds are in use, too. Return to work when the doctor says it’s acceptable to do so. Recommendations here may vary based on the workload.
  • Eating – Normal diet can typically resume when a patient is ready for it.
  • When to worry – Some discomfort is expected, but a fever of more than 100.4 degrees, vomiting or diarrhea that lasts and worsening pain are all reasons to call the doctor. If the incision areas turn red or produce a foul-smelling discharge, call the doctor, as well.

Inguinal hernia repair is generally a simple procedure that doesn’t involve a long recovery period. Patients, however, should take care in the first few days after surgery and must follow instructions carefully to ensure they are back on their feet as quickly as possible.
