India isn’t known as a sub-continent for no reason. It is self sufficient in more ways than one. Want heavy snow and sub-zero temperatures? No need to go to Alaska or Russia, just drop by to Kashmir. Feeling blue? Kerala waits with open arms, welcoming you to take a vacation. Feeling adventurous? Jim Corbett is as exciting as any place in South Africa. Brimming with diversity, it comes as no surprise that India has a plethora of options for bike riders too!

The amazing bike trails of India can be divided geographically, based on distance or budget but we’ll present you with options based on topography.

Let’s start with the sea level. The lower part of our country is a peninsula which means that we have a coastline of about 7,500 kms and beach sides do make for excellent bike rides. The first one on this list is Kerala. This is not a specific route but an entire state which has much to offer and is a place worth exploring! The ride along these roads has a rustic air to it. Further south are the Golden East coast road and Rameshwaram- the Pamban bridge to be specific, up until Dhanushkodi. The route from Mumbai to Goa is also quite picturesque with elements of both the hills and seas along the way to provide a unique experience.

If you’re more of a fly-through-the-highway kind of person there are some treats for you. The Yamuna-Expressway is the first that comes to mind when you think of long journeys and high speeds. Flying through tar is simple but what about salt marshes? Yes, we’re talking about the Rann of Kutch where you can ride uninterrupted for miles and miles under a blanket of stars.

Been there, done that? For those who are bored by the flat stretches, Rajasthan provides respite. Jaisalmer, Alwar, Sawai Madhopur among other cities have the most glorious sand dunes and hills which can be conquered by bike riders. Of course, special modifications may have to be made to the motorcycle but the result will be worth it! Going back to nature doesn’t necessarily mean the desert, there are also forests to explore. Ride from Bangalore to Bandipur to see wildlife you probably thought only belongs between the pages of The Jungle Book!

Nature lovers have it best! The trails to the Northeast of India, especially those in Meghalaya, Nagaland and Sikkim have a very strong appeal to those who want to travel through uncharted terrain. There are hills, forests, plantations and waterfalls unspoilt by tourists.

Finally we come to the most popular yet challenging bike trips, undertaken only by the pros – the trails to the Himalayas. Voted by members of Trails Of India as the "Most Exciting Trail" is the route from Manali to Leh. Other amazing trips that originate at Manali are those to Ladakh on one side and to Spiti valley on the other.

We’re sure these trails across India will be sufficient to quench the thirst of wanderlust of the biker inside you. To know more about such trails log on to the Trails Of India website or download the app from Google Play Store and iOS App Store.
