Doctor Richard Reid - An Experienced Gynaecologist & Pelvic Reconstructive Surgeon

Doctor Richard Reid is a highly experienced gynaecologist & pelvic reconstructive surgeon based in Sydney. After graduation with an MBBS medical degree from the University of Queensland, Dr Reid worked as a public health officer in Papua New Guinea. He then returned to Australia to complete his specialist training at Royal Prince Alfred Hospital in Sydney. He was admitted to Membership in the Royal College of Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists in the 1977, and had the honour of winning the F.J. Browne Gold Medal for highest marks in that year’s membership examination. He subsequently earned Fellowships in the American College of Surgeons, the American College of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, the Royal Australian College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists, the Royal Australian and New Zealand College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and the Australian College of Cosmetic Surgery. He was also a founding member of the American Board of Laser Surgery, when it was formed in 1985.

Doctor Richard Reid did a Gynecologic Oncology fellowship at Wayne State University in Michigan. He then stayed on the Wayne State University faculty as an Assistant Professor for 19 years, before returning to private practice in Australia in 1996. During his academic career, Doctor Richard Reid earned six Research Grants (including two major grants from Centers in Disease Control on Atlanta, GA), from which he has authored over 100 scientific papers. These publications led to numerous speaking invitations all around the World. His achievements also earned his admission to several prestigious professional societies, including the Society of Gynecologic Oncologists, the Society of Gynecologic Surgeons, the Central Association of Obstetricians & Gynecologists, the American Society of Cytology, the American Society of Colposcopy & Cervical Pathology, the American Society of Gynecologic Pathologists, the American Society for Laser Medicine & Surgery, the International Society for the Study for Vulvar Diseases, the American Medical Association and the Australian Medical Association.

Doctor Richard Reid has been an accomplished medical educator in the areas of colposcopy, vulvo-vaginal disease, laser medicine and gynaecological surgery. He has directed many postgraduate medical workshops, around the World. Dr Reid was Co-director of a prestigious series of European Workshops in Pelvic Surgery, sponsored by Cook Medical and Tyco Healthcare between 2006 and 2010. These surgical skills workshops, held at the Royal College of Obstetricians & Gynaecologists and University of London, were established to train international pelvic floor surgeons in vaginal hysterectomy and the new defect specific methods of incontinence and pelvic organ prolapse repair. The courses featured teaching modules on pelvic anatomy, biomaterials use and the acquisition of advanced surgical skills. Dr Reid’s contribution covered such topics as conceptualizing essential vaginal hysterectomy steps, patient positioning and maximizing exposure, controlling persistent ooze, advanced surgical anatomy of pelvic sidewall, histology of second generation biomesh healing, and how tissue engineering can evoke permanent healing without implanting a foreign body. He is also an accomplished anatomist, and has taught Cadaver Pelvic Anatomy Courses at Meharry Medical College, St. Louis University, the University of Sydney and Macquarie University.

In addition to a medical professional, he is also a sports enthusiast. He likes indulging in a variety of sports activities such as skiing, rugby, and a big fan of NFL American Football. Whenever he gets some time from his busy schedule or on weekends, he enjoys these activities with his friends who too have the same passion. Doctor Richard Reid is a benevolent person who supports various charities. He is a co-organizer of two Australian Cancer Council "Pink Ribbon" breast cancer fund raising events, and a patron of Filipino "Kind Heart" society that is engaged in helping disadvantaged children in need of foster care.
