All You Need To Know About Website Designs And Its Types
Posted: Feb 25, 2016
Usually, designers have their own preferences for website design types. To explain their preferences, they use terms such as liquid, responsive, fixed design etc. Now what do these precisely mean? How does these affect business? Here's all that you need to know about different website designs and types:
Fixed Design
The web pages with fixed design comprise of a set width. This width will not alter even when the browser is resized. This is also regardless of the device the website is being viewed on. The content becomes quite hard to be viewed on smaller devices including tablets, smartphones etc. This tends to annoy users owing to the need to scroll horizontally so as to view the rest of the content displayed on pages. They may also require pinching and expanding over and over again to zoom into the text of page. Images and text on a page may fall apart when screen is reduced or enlarged.
Fluid / Liquid Design
A fluid or liquid design is referred to as so because the page content tends to spread itself out during browser resizing in a fashion to fill the browser width. The design tends to appear enlarged or somewhat shrunk. Percentages are used to build columns comprising of the webpage content. This is quite different from the traditional fixed columns used in fixed design. Hence, the columns may increase or decrease in size.
Responsive Design
It is one of the most popular and preferred website designs of the modern age. This kind of approach is targeted towards making website viewing easier owing to the website display ability on different devices. The website display is done in a fashion to help visitors read and navigate around easily. This rules out the requirement for resizing, panning or scrolling through the webpage in order to read the entire content of website. A website wit responsive design is easily viewable and usable on all devices including tablets, desktop computers, laptops, and smartphones. One of the best things about websites with responsive designs is that designers do not require designing different sites for compatibility with multiple formats. One site works on all devices.
Websites created using responsive design are designed to display different content as and when the browser is expanded or reduced to predetermined sizes. This means when the browser size gets reduced to around 70 per cent of its maximum width, the web page may have been set to display just 2 columns on the screen as compared to three. Later on, when the browser is expanded past 70 per cent of the screen, the third column gets returned to the screen.
Image and video quality are downloaded differently as per the internet connection used by the device. For instance, if a video is being watched on slow internet connection, the site will display video in lower resolution and not the high resolution version. This way, the user can enjoy quick video download quicker. There is no need for the user to tolerate ''buffering screen''.
The Best Choice
In order to zero in on a specific type of web design, companies must assess devices their target audiences view websites on. This will help in determining the best design structure. In case, the target audience does not use smartphones, avoid spending a lot of money or time on coming up with an ideal responsive design structure for smartphones. However, keeping in mind the future developments, it is always wise to prepare your website for all devices.
