Diamonds are the most popular stones in the world. It’s a dream of every woman to have an exclusive stone on her finger. The rarest pieces of these precious stones are extremely expensive. A diamond cut is basically a style guide which is used while shaping the stone for polishing.

However, the cut here does not resemble the shape of the diamond, but it greatly affects the shine and brilliance of the stone. Marquise cut diamonds also known as "Naiveté" cut diamond or "little boat" diamond. It is an elliptical shaped brilliant cut diamond with pointed ends. This oblong and curved shape is flattering and unique. Its shape is distinctive and attractive.

History of "Naiveté" cut diamonds:

Marquise cut diamond has obtained its name from the Marquise of Pompadour. King Louis XIV of France had instructed his court jeweler to create a stone which resembled the smile of his beautiful mistress.

Characteristics of the Marquise cut:

  • The diamond is generally comprised of 58 facets.
  • The diamond appears large and narrow, as it maximizes the carat weight
  • It can make fingers appear longer and slender.
  • Its unique shape makes it the center of attention and hence it is in more demand.
  • If the diamond is improper in cut, then ‘bow-tie’ effect is observed at the Centre of the stone.

"Naiveté" Cut Diamond Guidelines:

Color and Clarity: As the shape of Marquise appear large, the color and clarity of the diamond is important. It reflects the appearance of the diamond. The color and clarity in case of this diamond is apparent. The diamond may appear slightly dark towards the points; hence, high grades are to be preferred to make it look its best.

Size: The Naiveté cut diamonds look large from the face up position. Usually Marquise cuts are 10mm long X 6mm wide approximately.

Table percent: The table percent should be between 53 – 63 percent. The length lowers than 50 and higher than 70 percent looks poor in quality.

Depth: Ideally, the depth for a high quality cut is between 59 and 63 percent.

Crown height:It should be between 12 to 15 percent.

Girdle: Extremely thin or thick girdle thickness diamonds are to be avoided.

Length to width ratio: Ideally, for a high quality Marquise cut, the length of the diamond has to be 1.75 to 2.25 of its width.
