Free basics
Posted: Feb 29, 2016
3.2 million Indians support free basics. Do you?
Facebook your daily source of entertainment, your daily routine to beat the boredom. The most important app on your mobile phone sends you the notification "ACT Now to save digital equality".
It claims that it’s here to help your people to raise from the wraths of poverty and witness the real development. When you hear the story of the poor farmer raised from the litter of poverty with free basics to earn his daily bread. Would you oppose?
Do u see Facebook as the messiah for the world’s second largest democracy with fastest growing 400 million internet users?
Do you feel the sense of responsibility to contribute your bit to this Nobel cause and send a mail to TRAI?
Well, slow down. We have the other side of the story too.
Let’s paint the picture for you if free basics comes in to reality.
- their way or high way
Fairly, you get to use apps and website for free but only limited number of them, say about a 100. So, if you want to use a new app that’s not according to technical specification of FB then you’ll have to let go of it.
- Shell out more money
You end up paying more money for using different apps which aren’t given by the service providers, according to differential pricing set by the Teleco’s.
- Freedom on Internet is gone for a toss
All websites are equal under the eyes of law. Free access to every website on the internet is totally lost with free basics. Net neutrality will come to an extinction. Creates a digital divide between rich and the poor.
- No VoIP?
People who can’t read need videos and calls to understand the functions on apps and websites. Helping the poor is much harder with such technical specifications. The whole idea of free basics becomes futile.
Amidst the backlash against the misleading free basics ads and massive support for "net neutrality". Facebook is trying hard to win the support of the people. So, what’s your call "Net neutrality or "Free basics"?
