Literature assignments are the ones that create the most amount of problems for the students while they are at college. No matter what the intentions of the teachers might be for giving those assignments, students never find the use of writing about something that happened about a century ago. There are a lot of different types of assignments that we have to deal with when we are in college; we have to write complex dissertation assignments, cultural assignments, project reports and summaries. Today’s article focuses on how to write the perfect summary. A summary is a brief overview of the piece of prose or poetry that’s almost one-third of the length of the original piece. The thing about summaries is that to write them perfectly, you need to be an avid reader as well as an avid writer. A lot of people manage to write good essays and articles, but fail to do justice when writing a summary. This is because sometimes they miss important details about the story or the poem that shouldn’t have been left out. Let’s then discuss with our readers some vital points that always are needed to be kept in mind in order to write the perfect summary. Read on to know:

Read at least twice:

The first principle of summary writing: Read the prose or poem at least twice for starters. You will not be able to write the summary of the piece in consideration if you just skimmed through it just once, unless of course, you composed the thing yourself. When students skip this step, they experience certain difficulties while writing the summary as it means the summing up of all the important points. But what if you have skipped reading the important points? How would those points then be incorporated into the summary if you are not aware of those even?

Highlight:

Take a highlighter and highlight all the things that you think should be in the final summary that you come up with. Later on, make sure that the highlighted points never get missed by you.Again, highlighting does not in any way mean that you take a highlighter pen in your hands and highlight each and every line of the text. One has to be skilled enough while doing this step, and which can be done only when you have read the text at least twice or thrice.

Create a timeline:

Next up, you need to create a timeline where you will mention for your own convenience the way you are going to structure the whole summary. Just keep in mind that you have to at least write 1/3rd of the words that were present in the original piece.Make sure that the timeline is created keeping in mind the word limit, or else you will end up crossing the word count and losing the marks as a consequence.

Let the words flow:

Once you are done with the above mentioned tasks, all you have to do is to let the inner voice dictate the terms to you. You need to then write and write endlessly until you think that the word count has been reached and you have accommodated everything. But at the end, ensure that you go through the draft once for any grammatical or structure errors before turning it to the teacher or whoever is going to mark it.
