Misaligned teeth can become troublesome and cause different problems when you eat or bite. It can make your face look unbalanced or deformed. Moreover, it can cause a misaligned jaw and TMJ disorders, which can be painful and bothersome. Orthognathic surgery aims to correct misaligned teeth and jaws, and this can be performed by a reputable and skilled plastic surgeon. Also known as 'jaw surgery', orthognathic surgery aims to realign your teeth and jaws to improve the way they function. Surgery may be able to improve any deformities caused by the misaligned teeth and jaws, too, so your face can look better.

Minor cases of misaligned teeth and jaws can be resolved by wearing braces, but severe cases may require orthognathic surgery to achieve quicker and more permanent results. Jaw surgery may be a good option for correcting moderate to severe misaligned jaw and teeth problems that orthodontics may be unable to resolve. Orthognathic surgery combines both orthodontics and jaw surgery to correct jaws and teeth that are unable to align properly. It is recommended to older patients (not children), usually around the ages 16 to 18 for males and 13 to 15 for females.

Orthognathic surgery may help make chewing and biting easier, and enhance your overall chewing function while minimizing excessive breakdown and wear of the teeth. It can correct imbalance of facial features, improve the appearance of underbites, crossbites, and overbites, and make a deficient chin look more prominent. Jaw surgery may restore the symmetry to the lower and middle features of the face, too.

In some cases, jaw surgery may be performed to correct and repair post-traumatic facial injuries, abnormalities, and defects, or reduce the risk of TMJ (temporomandibular joint) disorders and other types of jaw problems. Orthognathic surgery could improve toothless smiles where your lips tend up covering all the teeth. It can also improve gummy smiles where the lips pull upward or are unable to fully close, resulting in the exposure of more areas of the gums. The surgery could be the solution you need if you have sleep apnea, too.

Skilled plastic and cosmetic surgeons can perform orthognathic surgery inside the mouth to avoid facial scars on the jaw, chin, and around the mouth. A surgeon may cut in the jawbone to reposition it. Once the jaws have been properly aligned, bone plates and screws are used to keep them in place. At times, extra bone—which can be sourced from your rib, leg, or hip—may be placed to the jaw and secured temporarily with wires. In any case, this type of surgery must be performed in a hospital, and you may be required to stay one to two days. Recovery at home may take about three to six weeks.
