Web hosting has provided convenient options of hosting to individuals and customers. It started with the shared and dedicated hosting and later came up with the unique VPS server hosting. Shared hosting offers limited resources and there are hoards of customers hosting on the server and sharing the resources. It is the cheapest form of web hosting available and many first timers, bloggers, and startups prefer to launch their websites here. The host takes responsibility of the maintenance and management of the server and offers complete customer support. Dedicated hosting is the most expensive form of web hosting and is ideally suitable for large business houses. The entire server is leased out to one single customer and that customer alone gets full control of it. It offers lots of benefits and enhanced security.

What is a VPS server?

VPS server hosting has come as an ideal solution for both small businesses and large businesses. It offers a dedicated server in a shared environment. A large physical server is sliced into smaller virtual servers and offered to various customers. Each of these virtual servers comes with the same facilities and resources that a dedicated server customer gets. The clients get a dedicated RAM, disk space and CPU. The server is customizable as required by the business. It offers more security and privacy than what a shared hosting customer gets. If the resources are not required on a regular basis, the extra resources that one gets on the dedicated server will go waste and the client will be paying for resources that have not used.

Another advantage with VPS server hosting is when on certain days there is a traffic spike and additional resources required to manage the extra traffic, resources are drawn from a pool of shared reserves. These reserves take care of the extra flow of visitors. This is not possible in a shared environment. Dedicated server has the extra resources but the user would be wasting the resources as they need more of RAM and space only on certain days. But the client has to check with their service provider if they offer this burstable memory service.

Options in level of support:

VPS server hosting also comes with three options of support level. In the unmanaged VPS hosting, the host is responsible only for the hardware and network support. the client has to handle all the software and performance issues. In semi-managed or partially managed hosting, user takes care of all the customized software while the host is responsible for the network issues, hardware and the pre-installed software. In fully managed VPS hosting, the client handles all the customized software issues while all network, hardware and software issues are the responsibility of the host.

VPS server hosting is available with both Windows and Linux operating system. It is an ideal web hosting option for the small businesses that has outgrown the shared environment but find the dedicated server a bit of a waste of money and resources. the customer can always upgrade later if the need for more resources arise at a later stage.
