Why Your Site Designer Is Insisting On Soil Nails
Posted: Mar 08, 2016
While some construction projects call for relatively minimal site preparation work that is not always the case. When site designers and engineers insist in using drilling companies to place soil nails in the ground that means prep work required is going to be more extensive to ensure safety and stability of the resulting structure. Soil nails are a time-tested design that is called for when earth retention is a must to enable construction to move forward. The process may also be called for when existing retaining walls are failing to hold up over time.
Drilling companies that specialize in soil nails and other retention techniques use these methods to achieve a variety of goals. Soil nails, for example, may be used to stabilize slopes, prevent landslides, make sure excavation sites are safe, to create tunnels and more. The process itself requires drilling companies to handle because of their expertise in working within tight spaces and within excavations.
Soil nailing itself involves the use of tension-resisting steel nails. These are put into place to provide temporary or permanent support for an excavation. These nails are driven into the earth to support walls that are built from the top down, generally. The end result is a strong wall meant to hold the earth in place so other construction-related activities can continue.
Soil nails are highly popular retention tools used under a variety of circumstances. This option is favored by many because of its performance ability and relative cost effectiveness. While seemingly "low -tech" in the grand scheme of things, a well-designed soil nail installation can prove to be very effective. This process is used for both shoring up existing construction and providing stability for new buildings to go into place.
If an architect, engineer or other site expert has recommended soil nails, be sure to ask the reasons behind the recommendation. It can also be insightful to ask what other options might be available so effectiveness and costs of all options can be carefully considered. A general rule of thumb, however, calls for remembering that work that involves any type of excavation will generally require stabilizing measures. Drilling companies do, however, have a variety of techniques to achieve the goal at this disposal. The best option will depend on the site conditions, budget and desired goal for the retaining structure.
