Dewatering, Drilled Shaft Construction Often Go Hand-In-Hand

Large scale construction projects often call for extensive site preparation before a single drop of foundational cement can be poured. When a structure demands a great deal of support, for example, drilling companies might be required to create drill shaft foundational elements while also providing dewatering support.

A drilled shaft is a foundational element that is not visible from above the ground. The process involves creating deep shafts and specific intervals in the ground. Once these shafts are drilled, reinforcing steel is placed into the openings and concrete is poured. The process essentially provides extra stability for anything that might be built on top of it. Drilled shaft designs, for example, are essential for providing support from foundational shifting for large buildings, heavy tanks, towers and even bridges.

While the drilled shaft construction method is a valuable one for providing foundational support, the process often calls for dewatering as well. This involves the use of specialize drilling and pumping equipment to remove ground water from a shaft so the steel reinforcements can be placed and concrete poured. Drilling companies that specialize in providing foundational support elements will generally handle both processes themselves.

Once drilled shaft construction is fully complete, the rest of the construction process can generally begin. These below ground structures provide sound support for heavier structures to be on top of. In the case of bridge construction when underwater excavation might be required, the process can prove to be especially tricky. This is why general contractors on large construction projects typically call upon drilling companies with a great deal of expertise in this arena to handle this part of the production phase. Drilling companies are uniquely qualified to handle drilled shaft construction because of their soil excavation and dewatering experience.

If a contractor explains that site work may take longer and require more extensive prep than initially thought, there’s a good chance that stability measures for the foundation are required. If the above ground structure will be especially large or heavy, drilled shaft construction is likely to be part of the prep work process. Dewatering, too, may go hand-in-hand with the process to ensure the stability of all foundational aspects before construction moves forward.

If designs are needed for a project, look for drilling companies with extensive experience in the process. When shafts are properly designed, installed and dewatered, property developers can count on stability that will last.
