A Definition
Molecular Sieves are a commonly used desiccant. They are crystalline metal aluminosilicates composing of silica and alumina oxide. The major characteristic of Molecular Sieves is that they have uniform-sized pores, which only allow molecules of a certain size to pass through. It is by means of this method that the Molecular Sieve allows air to pass through and holds back both water vapour and impurity molecules. These desiccants are usually available in 3A, 4A, 5A and 13X types. Different forms of molecular sieves have different applications.
It is synthetically manufactured by replacing sodium ions present in the inherent 4A sieve with potassium cations. This replacement reduces the pore size of the Molecular Sieve from 4Å to 3Å. Molecular Sieve 3A is also known as the potassium form of the type A.
Petroleum Industry
It has many uses across industries depending on its absorption capacities. It is mainly used as an all-purpose drying agent both in polar as well as nonpolar media. This type of Molecular Sieve desiccant is very important for the petroleum industry. Here Molecular Sieve 3A is mainly employed in the separation and purification of petroleum cracking gases and alkenes.
Purification is very important in the petroleum industry because the presence of any particles of water vapour or impurities in the gases and alkenes will greatly affect their functioning. Humidity in the gas streams can also lead to condensation and ice formation in the gas streams. So in the petroleum and allied industries, the main use of Molecular Sieve 3A is for gas stream purification.
It is utilized in the drying process of unsaturated hydrocarbon streams like cracked gas, polypropylene, butadiene and acetylene. This particular desiccant is also used in the drying of methanol and ethanol, both of which are polar liquids.
It has takers in the LPG industry as well. Here, the desiccant is used to reduce the humidity levels present in the liquid gas to very minimum levels. The presence of high levels of moisture will hamper the smooth functioning of the gas stream as issues like condensation can crop up. This Molecular Sieve is very integral to the smooth functioning of petroleum and LPG industries.
