Royal Enfield sales rise by 63%, while Hero MotoCorp and Bajaj sales grow by 13.6% & 9% respectively

The two wheeler industry saw a decent run in February 2016 with most of the manufacturers showing their sales in the green. Comparing the trends to 2015, when the two wheeler segments almost bled by the end of the year, January was reportedly the only month when the industry saw a moderate growth of 1.1%. Around 70% of the market share in the two wheeler industry saw a decline of over 6% in the first quarter of CY2015. With a stark contrast the scooter segment recorded a growth of an impressive 18% in the same period.
According to Honda, the contribution of automatic scooters to overall two wheeler industry has grown by 2% points to 30% in April-January period of FY’2015-16 on YoY basis.
In February 2016, Hero MotoCorp recorded a growth in sale by 13.6%, TVS posted 7% growth, Royal Enfield reportedly grew by a massive 63% compared to 2015, Mahindra grew by 16%, Yamaha saw sales grow by 50%, Honda recorded a growth in sales with its Honda CB shine and Activa while Bajaj saw a rise of 9% in sales.
Here’s a look at the sales figures for Feb – 2016
Yamaha – Yamaha Motor India Pvt. Ltd. revealed a growth rate of 50% in domestic sales in February 2016, as compared to the corresponding period last year. The company sold 56,960 units in February 2016 as against 37,982 units sold in February last year in the domestic market. According to Roy Kurien, VP – Sales and Marketing, Yamaha Motor India Pvt. Ltd, the growth is a result of Yamaha’s innovative customer contact programs and increasing reach.
Bajaj – Bajaj Auto Ltd., saw a rise in sales by 9%. In Feb 2015 Bajaj saw sales figures of 2,16,077 units, while in Feb 2016 they saw their sales increase to 2,35,282 units. Out of these total sales in Feb 2016 the exports accounted for 98,959 units.
Mahindra – Mahindra two wheelers sold 8591 units in Feb 2015 in comparison to 9952 bikes in 2016. The bike manufacturer saw a rise of 16% over Feb ’15. Exports stood at 1309 units out of the total 9952 bikes.
TVS – TVS posted a growth of 7% in Feb 2016, with total sales increasing from 204,565 units recorded in the month of February 2015 to 219,467 units in the month of February 2016. Total two wheeler sales increased by 8% from 195,509 units recorded in February 2015 to 211,148 units in February 2016. Domestic two wheeler sales grew by 11.4% with sales increasing from 164,508 units in February 2015 to 183,199 units in February 2016. Scooter sales of the company grew by 18.2% increasing from 56,750 units in February 2015 to 67,089 units in February 2016. Motorcycles recorded 3.8% growth with sales increasing from 74,292 units in the month of February 2015 to 77,093 units in February 2016.
Honda MotoCorp – Activa is the only two wheeler model in India to cross 2 lakh unit sales in January 2016. 125cc motorcycle CB Shine reinforces its No. 1 position in executive segment with 23% growth. With a sale of 2,10,123 units, Activa became the first two wheeler in India to cross 2 lakh sales mark in January 2016. Honda’s urban sporty 110cc motorcycle LIVO has crossed 1 lakh unit sales, this comes at a time when overall 110cc mass motorcycle segment continues to decline by -6% led by weak buying sentiment in rural economy.
CB Shine is leading the assault in the 125cc motorcycle segment as it continues to build on volumes. In January 2016, CB Shine sales jumped a massive 23% to reach 76,562 units and Honda’s market share in this segment reached 46%.
Royal Enfield –
Royal Enfield has reported a 63% jump in total motorcycle sales at 49,156 units in February 2016 as compared to 30,240 in 2015. Sales of motorcycles with engine capacity of up to 350cc stood at 43,741 units during the month as against 26,492 in the same month of 2015, an increase of 65%. Sales of models with engine capacity exceeding 350cc stood at 5,415 units, up 45%, compared with 3,748 units in the corresponding month last year.
Exports of Royal Enfield were at 1,589 units during the month as against 749 in February 2015, an increase of 112%.
2016 will see a number of bikes being launched which includes the likes of the MV Augusta series, Vespa FI, Vespa Liberty, Mahindra Gusto 125, Honda CB Unicorn and others.
