There are a number of myths, though, about oil changes, and drivers use some of these to delay having their vehicle’s oil changed. Fiction: Oil should be changed every 5,000 km.

Fiction: Dark oil needs changing.

New oil is mostly clear, although slightly coloured. It becomes dark within just a couple days of being in a car, though. Dark oil may need to be changed, but a dark color does not automatically mean that the oil needs changing. It simply indicates that the oil is doing its job and removing particles from the engine.

Fact: The distance driven, not the colour of the oil, determines when it is time for an oil change.
