A child is like a blank slate; whatever is written on the blank slate gets imprinted on the child’s mind permanently. During the growing years a human being is very sensitive and receptive to the environment and the family environment shapes the personality of the child. In today’s world where both the parents are working, on needs domestic help or part time nanny to take care of the child while the parents are away. How to decide which nanny to choose for the child? How can a Nanny replace a mother’s tender love and care? It is even a bigger problem when a child has suffered a terminal illness or is a child with special needs. The local Paediatric health care home centres offer facilities to the parents after treatment and offer staff nurse for full time care and supervision of the child.

But it is essential for the parents to cross check and interview the staff nurse before hiring for their child. Some of the points to be considered before hiring domestic help for the child are:

  1. Education and Training; while choosing a staff nurse it is essential to know about her background, i.e. what are her qualifications? How much experience she holds in taking care of infants and toddlers? It is important to know about the educational background and practical experience of the nurse as it gives a rough idea about her skills and expertise.
  2. Emotional Support: The nature of the nurse is important as the children who need palliative care need to be supported and motivated emotionally and mentally. It is essential to keep them mentally strong and optimistic about life and accept the fact that they are not doomed; but are special children with their own special goal in life however big or small it is.
  3. Professionalism: The nurse to be hired should be professional and should fulfil her duties in a timely manner. She is expected to be proficient with the techniques and medical equipment of the child and provide the child with speech or physiotherapy which ever are recommended.
  4. Patience and Perseverance: Mentally complex children need a lot of patience and training to understand even the basic day to day activities. The staff nurse needs to show patience with the child and teach him bit by bit about the daily activities like washing, bathing, brushing, etc.

These are the few qualities expected in the paediatric nurse which are the prerequisite for their recruitment. A child with special needs is complex in comparison to a normal child and has a negative approach towards life. Along with parents who have to put a brave face and create a sustainable environment for the child; a nurse also needs to support the parents and treat the child as a normal child without showing any sympathy. A nurse with warm heart, caring hands and a friendly attitude will go a long way in treating the illness and keeping the child optimistic about life.
