Calgary Car Dealerships Separate Fact from Fiction: Tire Pressure
Posted: Dec 14, 2013
When you are zipping down the road at 100 kilometres per hour, only four little pieces of rubber are keeping you and your car connected with the road. The tires of a car are some of its most important components, and also some of the least understood. Below are some of the most common myths that car dealerships in Calgary hear drivers claim about tires, and why they are not true.
Fiction: New cars at Calgary car dealerships have TPMS, so drivers don’t need to check tire pressure.
Many of the new cars for sale at Calgary’s car dealerships come equipped with a tire-pressure monitoring system (TPMS). Drivers often think, mistakenly, that this system will alert them to a soft tire, and therefore they do not need to check their tire pressure. TPMS, though, only issues an alert when a tire falls 25 percent below its minimum pressure, by which time it will be quite soft. Therefore, drivers should still manually check their tire pressure.
Fact: TPMS is a nice safety feature, but it is not a substitute for manually checking tire pressure.
Fiction: If my tires are inflated beyond their “max press” pressure, they might explode.
The “max press” pressure of a tire is not an indication of how much air a tire can hold before it explodes. It is, rather, the pressure at which the tire can carry the most weight. Hopefully, your tire’s max press will match the recommended tire pressure from your automobile manufacturer.
Fact: “Max press” indicates the ideal pressure for a tire.
Fiction: A large-diameter wheel and low-profile tire improves handling.
It is true that when a large-diameter wheel with a low-profile tire is initially turned, it has a quick response. It often responds quicker than smaller wheels with higher profile tires. Beyond this initial response, though, there is no benefit. The primary factor that affects a tire’s handling capabilities is the compound of its tread, or how sticky its rubber is. The wheel size has a very minimal, if any, affect.
Fact: For good handling, talk with a mechanic at one of Calgary’s car dealerships and invest in a tire with good tread.
