Posted: Dec 14, 2013
Very often prospective buyers become concerned about choices between LCD TV and LED TV. Is the concern justified?
Buyers looking for a Best Televisions often become confused as they cannot decide buying of a LED TV or LCD TV. Few however really understand that there is little or no difference. In fact; the term LED TV is a misnomer though many providers and buyers use the term freely. Difference between the two types is more the brainwork of manufactures and retailers instead of technologies.
Why Differentiate?
Yet it might be pertinent differentiating the two because the terms has entered and virtually got imprinted in public minds and most people consider LED and LCD TVs as different from each other which may not be the right way to describe them.
What is LED TV?
Basically LED TV has the following features.
- LED TVs are nothing but LCD or Liquid Crystal Display TVs with LED lights lighting the rear.
- This means for backlighting LED TVs use LED lights instead of the traditional fluorescent CFL lighting of the LCD TVs.
- Both LCD and LED TVs use the crystal diode or LCD technologies in respect of front panel. These panels contain twining crystals; a gift of the LCD technology.
LED TV Backlighting
For backlighting, the LED TVs use a couple of distinctive forms.
- Backlighting with edge lighting.
- Backlighting with local dimming.
Edge Backlighting of LED TV
In case of edge lighting the LEDs are spread around the edge of the panel. The result is ultra thin construction. With the advancement in technologies it has now become possible manufacturing extremely thin as well as small devices. In case of local dimming process also the devices can be very thin as they can be manufactured in tiny sizes.
Local Dimming Backlighting for LED TV
In case of local dimming backlighting the LED lights are placed behind the panel and they can be regulated to generate low light in dark areas and bright light in lighted areas. Variations can be achieved using the varying feature options available in most modern TVs. When the local dimming lights are on; they will help make the black features more prominent for the viewers.
Picture Quality and Brightness
- In LCD TVs the LCD panels used to create black tones as they block the passage of backlight through panel.
- But the problem is that it often creates black tones; a problem in display using the LCD technologies.
- of local dimming light provides a solution to the problem that cannot be controlled using Edge backlighting.
Problem Resolution with Brand Quality
Sometimes brand quality resolves all the problems relating to lighting, picture quality and brightness of the TVs in question. An example is the Samsung UN55F7100 that comes with one of the best color renditions coupled with great picture quality.
In recent times some of the LCD TVs have displayed concentrated black tones. Also while the white LED backlights do not make much difference in respect of edge or dimming lighting in case of RGB colored lights the difference will be very prominent.
