Dr. Byron Brown - Traits That A Good Doctor Must Possess
Posted: Mar 29, 2016
During the course of his career as a medical professional, which started in 1998 following his graduation from the University of South Carolina’s School of Medicine, Dr. Byron Brown has had the opportunity to meet many fellow professionals. He has noted that the best doctors all possess a number of traits that make them more effective when it comes to providing treatment to their patients, noting all of the following as being particularly important.
Good Bedside Manner
Caring for a patient extends far beyond the medical treatment that you can offer them. The best doctors all attempt to establish relationships with their patients through strong communication and good bedside manner. This allows for trust to form between the patient and doctor, making the patient more willing to provide important details about their condition and more accepting of the treatment that their doctor prescribes to them.
Dedication
From the moment that a person makes the decision to study medicine, their dedication to the field will constantly be called into question. They will be required to learn an enormous amount of materials during their educational career, in addition to constantly updating this knowledge base once they start their careers in earnest. A doctor who lacks dedication is unlikely to maintain the same level of knowledge as their peers, which may lead to them providing inadequate care to their patients.
Patience
Each person that you encounter during the course of your medical career will offer a different set of challenges, all of which must be overcome in order to provide the highest standards of care. Doctors will often need to be skilled in handling patients who are untrusting are react unexpectedly to any news that is given to them, which often requires the doctor to exercise their patience and maintain a logical thought process, rather than reacting in an emotional fashion.
Empathy
A good doctor must be able to put themselves in their patient’s position so that they can understand the stresses they are going through. Dr Byron A Brown notes that empathy is vital to the success of a doctor as it allows them to form a deeper connection with their patients while also driving them to constantly do the best job possible to ensure the patient receives the standard of care that they expect. A doctor who struggles with being empathetic will often run into difficulties in other areas, such as maintaining good bedside manner or communicating effectively.
