Wall tapestries are a beautiful form of art and has been evolving for centuries now. These tapestries are essentially a design or scenery or any depiction portrayed on a heavy fabric with help of weaving or embroidery. These days, the patterns and designs can also be printed upon the fabric. It is the traditional art of creating intricate designs and styles that requires skilled artisans with loads of experience.

The art of making tapestries goes a long way back to the Roman Empire around the time of third century B.C. Since then this art has been constantly evolving and advancing with day and age. They have also played an important role in conserving our history and culture. Primarily, wall tapestries were just pieces of art and as with any art form, they did not serve any purpose other than being a piece of art. This changed when churches in the medieval periods started using tapestries for symbolic purposes by displaying them on social occasions of importance.

Sometimes these wall tapestries were also used as a measure of insulation for walls in the winter season as we all know that these can be really handy. The royalty as well as wealthy families used this art form to depict their pride and honor. The kings used to have large wall tapestries made for depicting their portraits as a sign of superiority and might. The tapestries were also highly portable as these could be easily rolled up and taken to other places. Though these were usually displayed on walls, but in some cases, also kept as table tops or even on floors.

Wall tapestries are usually made by interlacing differently colored threads into a very thick fabric. This interlacing is done in a manner that on the front side of the tapestry, a design or depiction is portrayed and the laces behind the fabric are usually discontinued where their purpose ends. This is how tapestries have been made for centuries but now, with technological advances, these pieces of art have got an upgrade. Now the tapestries can be printed upon and hence can be produced in large numbers because of machine work. This does not mean that the traditional way of making these is dead. In fact, this machine manufacture format has made the hand crafted tapestries even more valuable and exotic.

Today we have brilliant computers programs and printers that are able to print state of the art designs and pictures, with intricate details and color changes, making wall tapestries even more exquisite. Even the thick fabrics used in tapestries, which took a long time to make in the past, can now be manufactured easily and at a fast pace due to the advantage of machine technology.

One can buy these art forms almost in any part of the world, now that the internet has come into the equation. Tapestries from every part of the world have their own set of pattern and charm.
