5 Foods To Restrict But Not To Avoid When Breastfeeding

Pregnancy brings a lot of stress and tension for soon to be mothers and it becomes overwhelmingly impossible to keep track of eating habits. Woes don’t here as the new family member needs a lot more attention and caring. Breastfeeding is one of the crucial stages of baby care in the early months. You shouldn’t be stumbling upon experiments and must take care of your diet.
Rumors are many about what all foods you should avoid and what to eat. There are no such hard and fast rules that can tell you what to eat and what not to when you are breastfeeding. There is no need to completely strike off some beloved foods from your list. Here we are going to provide you the list of five foods that you need to control but not eliminate from your diet.
Alcohol
You spent 9 months totally controlling yourself not to drink at all and not finally you are over that phase. This might often tempt you to have occasional glass of wine or beer. There is no harm in it as drinking just once and that too under control poses no potential threat for the new born.
Spoilers ahead-if you have crossed the limit and had a little more or too much wine or beer or any alcoholic beverage then it is important not to breastfeed. Wait until alcohol is cleared off from your system. If your breast gets too much filled you can pump the milk and dump it.
High-mercury fish
Mercury is present in almost every fish and it is not advisable to eat fish that are high in this neuro toxin. But it certainly doesn’t mean you do not eat fish at all. Fish is a rich source of protein being very low on fat.
Therefore you should include fish in your diet but make sure to avoid kinds that are high in mercury like swordfish, king mackerel, shark and tilefish. Best is to include in your diet are shrimps, catfish, salmon and tuna.
Caffeine
Many mother quite tea and coffee to avoid caffeine from affecting baby. Also other sources of caffeine are deemed to be harmful for the new born but not necessarily. It is fine to take moderate doses of caffeine when you are feeling sleepy. Point is you can continue with your morning coffee or evening tea and sip on that soda occasionally even when you are breast feeding. It’s totally normal to as long as you don’t take the dosage over 2 or 3 cups of coffee or tea a day.
Caffeine enters the blood stream and it can pass into breast milk. It can make baby jittery and wakeful.
Peppermint
That’s one ingredient that is not talked about in regards of breast feeding. Interestingly high amount of peppermint can inhibit the process of milk production. It is used for stopping milk production my mothers who don’t breast feed anymore. Therefore it is advised that you avoid intake of peppermint in large amount but enjoying peppermint tea once in a while is not going to be a problem.
Sage
Sage works same as peppermint and drops milk production. The same rule applies to keep the intake of sage under control and not use it in every dish.
These are the foods you need to lower down the consumption but not eliminate from your diet.
