The Art of Embossing and Its Features

Posted: Apr 08, 2016
When we talk of embossing it is with reference to an artistic technique where patterns are created with different materials like fabric, leather, paper and metal or wood. The patterns are formed as raised or in the form of a relief. The embossing can be done in different ways. Many items of regular use are embossed which can be notarized documents or book covers. Embossing is an art technique that has been around for hundreds of years. Many artifacts exist which vary from metal ornaments and tooled leather belts which come with such signs or patterns.
Different Ways Of Embossing
There are several ways of embossing. Some artists do embossing by hand and they use hand held tools by which stamps are used to emboss patterns on different materials. There are techniques for creating raised designs which are not replicated easily as in the case of embossing stamps or embossed leather belts. The art of creating raised designs is used for customized art pieces. Often embossing is done by this method when creating an embossing, die is not possible. Embossing techniques involve dry as well as heated methods. Different artists use diverse embossing techniques. Many commercial artists create embossed leather belts.
Use Of Die
Embossing is often done with a die or a roller which is common for commercial uses. The rollers allow continuous embossing to be done, which is common with the creation of leather belts or custom belt buckles. The roller is useful for creating a uniform pattern on different items as in an assembly line production. A die is used when single pieces need to be embossed one at a time. The patterns are usually carved in a reverse direction so that when the die is pressed on the material, the pattern will show in the right form. Often custom belt buckles are created by hand held tools. In mass produced embossed items the die is usually mounted on a press. The rollers and dies are used with heat induced embossing.
High Costs Of Embossing And Its Uses
Usually embossing is done on exclusive products and not on mass produced items. This is a die printing process which adds to the cost of normal printing. A separate run has to be organized through a press to create embossed items. In most commercial uses printed materials are embossed in the blind manner which signifies that it is done without ink. The die needs to be registered and it has to mesh with the inked patterns. Embossing is also common in paper printing where individual paper sheets are embossed in order to make them identifiable to different users. Notaries also use a hand held embossing tools like stamps in order to mark different legal documents from their registered offices. The stamps are difficult to forge and that lends an official and an authentic aspect to these papers. These are some of the diverse uses of embossing stamps.
