What is an Abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty is a surgical procedure that aims to flatten your abdomen by removal of the excess

fat and skin from it and tightening the abdominal wall muscles.

Although this is a major form of surgery it is now performed using minimally invasive technique that

requires less number of, and smaller, incisions than compared to the conventional open-type surgical

technique.

Am I a candidate for an Abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty is considered ideal for men and women who are in an overall healthy state.

Women, undergone previous pregnancies, may find it useful to tighten the loose abdominal muscles and

the excess drooping skin.

For men, this procedure is advised in case you have lost drastic weight in a short period of time and this

has resulted in the formation of excess fat deposits and loose skin around the tummy.

What are the types of Abdominoplasty?

There are basically two main types of abdominoplasty procedures:

Complete abdominoplasty – This surgery requires making an incision in the abdomen, from one

hipbone to the other, and then contouring the skin, muscle and other tissues as needed. This surgery

will require relocating your belly button and there is a need for a drainage tube to be attached for a few

days after the surgery.

Partial (mini) abdominoplasty – This procedure is ideally considered for people who have excess fat

deposits mainly under the navel. In this procedure, the surgeon will most likely not relocate your belly-

button and is a considerably shorter procedure.

What are the risks and complications associated with an Abdominoplasty?

There will be a slight pain and swelling in the abdomen for a few days after the surgery. The doctor will

prescribe painkillers to help relieve the pain.

There will also be feeling of numbness, bruising and tiredness during the recovery period.

There are several rare risks that can be seen in any form of major surgery, such as:

? Anesthetic reaction

? Infection

? Blood clots

? Bleeding

The doctor will take every possible precaution to avoid these complications from developing.

How fast is recovery after an Abdominoplasty?

An abdominoplasty performed using minimally invasive technique, takes a considerably shorter time

period for recovery than compared to when performed using conventional open-type surgical

technique.

The exact recovery time cannot be predicted accurately, however most people are able to go home in a

day or two and are able to get back to normal everyday activities within a week after the

abdominoplasty surgery.
