Contraception - Choices for Ideal Birth Control
Posted: Apr 15, 2016
Women have for been empowered with the choice of birth control for more than a century. But over the years science has perfected the medicines and devices to a huge extent which has made the selection process far easier. One can pick either medicines like pills or devices such as Intrauterine Devices or IUDs, sponge, ring, condoms, vasectomy, or plain abstinence. The multiple methods available all come with their fair share of advantages and disadvantages which women can either get accustomed to or simply move on to something more friendly.
The choice is made on the amount of convenience offered by the various contraceptive methods. Time is of immense importance in such cases and women cannot always remember to do things periodically or on a daily basis. It is one of the primary reasons why pills in spite of their effectiveness prove to be quite tedious. Emergency contraceptive pills also need to be consumed within three days of unprotected intercourse. Male condoms have a higher capacity to act as a contraceptive rather than the ones meant for women. Abstinence is a fool proof method which calls for depriving oneself which can lead to psychological problems even though physically you remain fit.
IUDs are highly effective among the birth control methods for women with nearly 99 percent positive results. It consists of a plastic or copper device which has to be inserted inside the uterus with the help of a health care provider or gynecologist. It offers protection for a period of three to twelve years depending on the variety that is being used. The intrauterine devices function by inhibiting the movement of the sperms and thereby preventing fertilization of the eggs. Whether the ‘T’-shaped device is made of copper or hormonal kind it is extremely effective and offers sufficient protection without affecting the quality of the relationship.
Both the hormonal and copper IUDs successfully prevent the sperms from the fertilization process. The former releases excessive mucus in the area which does not allow the sperms to reach the uterus. Then again the copper ones prove fatal to the sperms owing to the toxic quality it produces. Inserting this birth control method hardly takes a few minutes. Initially it may cause discomfort but that goes away in a few days. Sometimes local anesthesia may or may not be needed. The IUD string is something that women need to be cautious of because if it gets tugged the device can get displaced. Initial bleeding and mild cramping is possible but it usually goes away with time. An intrauterine device is best suited for women who are breastfeeding or do not and cannot use pills and other forms of hormonal birth control methods for women.
